cant get my laptop to load up+ more things wrong with it

My mate has given me his laptop as he cant get it working, when i turn it on it comes up with a message saying "NTLDR is missing" and then "press ctrl+alt+del to restart" and then it just goes back to the same thing?????

the laptop is one I have never heard of and he cant give me a recovery disc..the laptop is called..."TULIP@ction line vn"

I have my real copy of winxp pro, but do not know what was on his laptop before hand.
Let me know if more info is needed.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318728

I have only limited experience with NT/2000 etc. so I hope others can give you some info on what to do.

Matt

It is Win XP pro that is installed on the laptop now??

Will be an NT based system, either NT 4.0, W2K, XP or Server 2003. Likely to be W2K or XP though.
There is some home work available at the Microsoft KB site by entering NTLDR is missing. The following links should get you started.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318728 and http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320397 or http://support.microsoft.com/search/...mDays=&InCC=on

hi.

it doesnt seem to read the floppy drive or the cd drive

when i put in a boot disk, it says: Floppy disk fault -- insert valid boot disk and press any key

and when i put the xp cd in, it says it isnt a bootable cd. i have also tried to put in a 98 and ME cd, but it says the same thing.

Thanks, Liam

Liam,

Personally I don't give in to these hunks of metal and plastic until there is little hope left. I show the weight-challenged lady to the door when she starts to hum.

If looks like it is time for the "bin", why not open it up and check/reseat connections. It may have been knocked or dropped, but if you can get access to a floppy drive or CD drive "cleaner", it may remove some of the coffee that was spilled on it last time .

Nothing to lose.

Matt
