E:\ device not ready

I have a prob w/ my E:\ which is a rom drive { F:\is the R WR drive. } The rom drive is disabled some how I have gone to run... msconfig to remove it hoping for start up to re -load drivers\program but no. Ive gone to add remove programs to do the same thing. Ive gone to system to remove from start up also. I do have the adaptec cd creater 4 which also has direct cd3 drivers. I thought the direct 3 supported the E:\ drive. So what do I do now? download something from windows 98 to support the E drive? any help you could offer would be so great thanks ... Jen

You need to go into Device Manager to remove both drives under the heading CD-Roms. Right click on My computer and click on Device Manager to get there. When they reinstall, go back into Device Manager, go to Properties of each drive and make sure DMA is checked, if not check it and reboot.
Windows does not need any other drivers to read an IDE [CD-ROM] device. Writing requires software.
