Hello, I am using Norton Internet Security 2005 and keep getting warnings as soon as I dial in to my ISP, "A recent attempt to attck your computer was blocked ". Now, I have come to expect this to happen every now and then during browsing sessions, but this is happening before any browser is opened. It doesn't happen every time I connect but it does appear to only be happening late at night (most recent logs show it occuring only after 12pm) details on latest event are:

Rule "Default Block Bla Trojan Horse" blocked
    (computername(IP address),1042)
    inbound UDP packet.
    Local address,service is (localhost 1042).
    Remote address,service is (computername
    (IP Address),1042.
    Process name is "N/A ".

I have substituted my real computer name and the IP address for privacy purposes. Other attacks included the above mentioned trojan and "Portal Of Doom" trojan. I am almost positive my computer is clean as I just performed a fresh format and reinstall, and have had protection the entire time since.
This may just be a false positive, as Symantec products seem to be good aboout being "overprotective ". Any input would be appreciated.

You can't be sure your computer is clean, as NIS 2005 is obsolete & no longer supported. You should be running a newer version.

Obsolete, huh? Haven't thought about that, it still updates on a regular basis.
Do you think I should post the required logs in the "removal" forum just to be sure? I willl try an online scanner in the meantime just to check. Any suggestions on an anti-virus with real-time protection? Norton subscription is about to run out and I don't like the product anyway so I want to change.
    Thanks Arie, Jonathan
    :)

Once you get your viral problem cleaned up, I've met a large number of people who like Avira for their anti-virus and Comodo for their firewall.

    <personally uses both products>

As posted by Michael York from the Norton Authorized Support Team:

Newer products contain updated & more advanced detection methods, something you won't get on an old product, no matter if you receive 'definition' updates.

Ok, so now that we have determined that my computer is clean, back to the point of my thread. My question rephrased is, have the malware and viruses gotten so bad out there that all I have to do is connect to the internet to get infected? If so, why have I not experienced this on connections other than my own? Does it no longer matter that I use safe browsing habits and avoid opening attachments on emails from unknown sources, etc.?

AVG is the most popular (and most downloaded) free antivirus on the internet today - a lot of people know about it. I think it's a pretty decent program detection wise - and I like how it has antivirus and antispyware in one program. Problem is that it doesn't detct rootkits in the free version (programs that hide processes, registry entries, etc away from the system - usually done to hide malware so it's not detected by an antivirus). It is for this reason that I personally don't use AVG.

When I use a free product I actually use Avast! Home Edition - as in my personal opinion it is a more complete package (automatic updates more than once a day, antispyware, antivirus, and antirootkit). I especially like the boot time scanner (where it scans your system before windows fully boots so it can find and remove deeply embedded malware).

Yeah the one thing about AVG is just recently they updated definitions and their definition update contained a virus. AVG for the lose.

I currently run Norton Internet Security 2009 and this product is amazing, doesnt slow my computer down and is easily configured.

I'm going to challenge you on that. Maybe I just fail at google, but I haven't (yet) found any news stories talking about AVG updates actually infecting anyone's computer.

Pretty serious accusation to level. Since my research comes up short, can you show some proof of this very scary thing you're saying?

I agree, I have never, ever, not even, been infected with any Norton product since 2004. Either I'm lucky or the product works. Million program download king...
