Thank you Eraser so very much for your prompt response. It is appreciated.

I have had the Home edition for many years and have found it great to use, but of late my computer appears to have slowed down when opening programmes from icons on the desktop such as Mozilla and Outlook. Some friends have pointed the finger at Avast.

You really cannot win!!!

Oh. Is that so?
As far as i know, avast does not create extra processes except it's GUI one.
So ideally it should not slow down your system with extra processes.
Also avast downloads fast, updates fast and If the seniors suggest that it slows the system down, then please let me know how!!

You shouldn't notice any slowdown. Now if you are running multiple AV's (a NO-NO) anything can happen.

Ever since I have installed avast antivirus home edition, my system takes a little longer to start up.

Try delay avast from loading by Right click avast spinning icon>Program settings>Troubleshooting then check the "Delay loading of avast!...........
