AVG just installed .... slow startup
I recently just changed my antivirus software.
Let me ask this, Does avg free edition block against website viruses and scripts? Is it also that accurate?
My only security products currently on my system are Ghostwall, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and AVG Free. Is this ok? What is rootkit detector and do I even need it? If so, what program should I use for it?
I did not install the link scanner, since I don't use IE much. Although, AVG is slow on windows startup. I also disabled the scheduled scan on startup. I do not get a full internet connection, until AVG fully loads. So I wonder why. I would be very happy if this sluggish startup went away with avg. Any help appreciated.
Let me know if I may need to modify my security programs and possible help my slower startup issue since AVG.

AVG 8 is not recommended as it does not work properly for a vast majority of people out there.
If you want a free anti virus which does not slow down your computer to crawl, take a look at Avast www.avast.com

wow
My pc is now fast as hell after removing AVG and putting on avast. Now I need to figure out how to use this program. How do I disable the on-access scanner message?

Good. Vast majority of people have reported that.

Email Scanner Problem
When sending an email in Thunderbird with Avast Internet Mail Setting turned on, I get this error message.
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 6.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. Please verify that you email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again.
Send of Message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp .live.com failed. The server may be unavailable or refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator.
How do I fix this?

Turn off mail scanner. It's an overkill.

What do you mean? Your computer, including email program is monitored by Avast, no matter, if mail scanner is on, or off. I never install mail scanner.

Turn on email scanning only for incoming messages & set everything to default. That should fix it.

Maybe, but email is the single biggest source of virus.
Better to be safe than to be sorry.

When you have AV running, it scans everything, no matter, if email scanner is on, or not.

May be, may be not.
I had AVG for last few years & I had to disable its email scanner for my yahoo accounts, as yahoo times out with email scanner on. I left it on for my other accounts.
When the email scanner was on for my other accounts, it picked up virus straight away & would not let me save the attachment, which is more secure IMHO.
With Yahoo, it would save everything & when the attachment were opened , scanned them. In this case, the virus was already on my computer ready to be executed if the anti virus was not working or disabled.
Why take chances ?
