Thanks DAVE. FC PROBLEM RESOLVED

It's been a long three months! Dave was very helpful with my File Commander problem, but my machine was way beyond repair! I had to order the restore discs, and with two attempts, I finally got it right!
We never did figure out what happened = I am just grateful the machine is back up and running!
Can anyone recommend a good, free, security package?

Firewall: either ZA free or Sunbelt's Kerio or Comodo
AV: either AVG or Avast
Spyware/Malware: Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, AVG Antispyware, Comodo Antispyware

In my estimation, having used all of the above, I would go with Comodo for the firewall, AVG for the antivirus and skip the rest and pay the $19 for Sunbelt's CounterSpy. I think that spyware is the real culprit today and you get what you pay for. That's just my two cents' worth.
