Urgent! McAfee cannot update

McAfee used to run well in my computer. In these days I reinstalled OS and SP2, then McAfee. It was installed correctly, but always failed to update. I realized that I should have installed windows update first. So I uninstalled McAfee and go to updates. I have installed 88 updates. After that, I re-install McAfee. But still it cannot update correctly.

What can I do to correct the problem?

I tried to install a windows update, security update for flash player (KB923789) several times, but always failed. Do the two problems related?

Please help me promptly since now there is no any anti-virus software in my computer and I am quite worried.

What version of McAfee and is it stand alone AV or suite?

What messages do you get? I assume you did try manually updating as well.

Is your version of Flash Macromedia Flash Player version 6?

Just want to make sure we understand you correctly. When McAfee is installed, Windows Updates fail to install? And you opted to remove McAfee, leaving your computer without an antivirus? If so, re-install McAfee asap and we will look into why Windows Updates are failing.

BTW, the Flash Player related update pertains to versions prior to Flash Player 9.

Hi Dave,

The poster can answer, but the way I read the post:

McAfee is installed but won't update.

Can install Windows updates (installed 88 of them) but can't install the one for Flash, that's why I'm wondering what flash version is on the system.

Thanks a lot, Dave and Charles. And sorry for replying later. Without a proper antivirus, I do not access to internet often.

The McAfee is of version 8, I think, as the name of the install application is Vscan8-4677.

I check start - all programs and find no flash-player in my computer.

Probably I did not say the order of occurrences clearly. What happened is as follows. I first reinstall OS, then install McAfee and update it manually but fail. Then I uninstall it; then install 88 0f 89 windows updates. Then I install McAfee again and update it manually, but fail again. Then I uninstall it again.

Few minutes ago I reinstall it and then update it manually the third time. Updating fails another time. The last sentence of the message when updating is finishing is "file SK-det.mcs is corrupt. Update finished". I guess this "corrupt" is the reason.

Search for Flash. If it's present, you'll find it in C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\

If it's there, double clicking on GetFlash.exe will take you to the Flash update site.

I couldn't find out exactly what this file is searching Google. Your best bet would be to post this question on the McAfee support forums.
