I recently had a problem when trying to insert file attachments when using microsoft word or Microsoft outlook (basic edition 2003)

as soon as I clicked on insert and then try to navigate to say desktop it would hang......... after a very drawn out process as you can imagine I traced the problem a windows update and a security one at that... suggesting that it was important so after removing it the problem goes away... What I would like to know is there anyone else that has had a simular problem with this update? KB908531

should I be concerned as I am unable to install this update as it renders my system useless..........

I have checked the system and can not find any reason for this to be happening... I.e sfc chkdsk virus checks spyware checks etc

    running explorer 6.0

Thank you for any comments in advance.......

Yep, it seems to be one of those again!

Right now the only info coming from MS is that there's an "issue" with HP software, there have been work-arounds posted for that.

The common factor seems to be HP Share-to-web application (uninstalling seems to resolve a lot of problems).

After automatic download and install of KB908531, I could no longer copy or move mp3 files. Set restore to 1 day prior to auto install, and everything worked OK. I phoned hp/compaq help desk (computer is 2 weeks old) they had other reports of problems with KB908531, but didn't have an answer. Took my phone number, and said they would call back. Still waiting!

I'm living without KB 908531 for the time being!

    Had the same problem!

I have come across a few users that have also had problems with office hanging since windows update KB908531. For now i simply uninstalled this update and set it to not show it in the update list anymore. I have yet to figure out why only a few users are having this problem since we have thousands of identical computers here on campus, maybe i'll be hearing from the rest soon.:)

I work on an IT helpdesk and when a user calls in with a problem like this. We usually have to uninstall and reinstall office completely. This typically works. We have been in search of a solution as well and havent found anything other than this. There were a few users that just get an installation screen with Office looking for the proplus msi. Once it gets that it works fine.

Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't fix the issue.

Uninstalling and reinstalling office doesn't fix the problem completely. Since this update makes changes to windows explorer, i found that a reinstall will fix hangups during saves etc., but office will still hang when trying to navigate in the save as. . . dialog. Uninstalling the specific update fixes it completely. Also i have seen the specific issue about microsoft office asking for the proplus.msi. The fix for that is to make sure to do a "complete install" of office in the first place. If you only do a partial install, when logging in as different users and opening Office you will get this message the first time.

I know but the problem is that my company has 7 business units that all have different ideas about what IT really is. So each Business Unit installs differently. We are working on a standardized imaging process, but have no real way to enforce it. The proplus.msi is our biggest issue, the others are very few and far between. I will make my manager aware of the security update problem, and see if he wants to take it off. Otherwise its off with my head.

    What did you expect . . .

From Microsoft :)? They mess something up and then make you go through the registry to fix it!

rwarner - Welcome to the Board :)

What happens when you try to uninstall through Add/Remove programs?

The uninstall files are located in C:\Windows - you will need to enable 'Show hidden files and folders to view them.

It is only KB908531 which is causing troubles on some computers - MS are due to release an update tomorrow, Tuesday 25th as noted in my last post.
