Not Automatically Updating In NAV

I checked my Scheduled Tasks Symantec NetDetect says next run time 1700 9/3/2004 and Last Run Time 1700 9/1/2004. I just checked for updates and had a ton. Why all of a sudden did it stop automatically updating? All I get from the Symantec Support is that I have an Older version of NIS and NAV. My subscription expires 08-20-2005.

There is a lot happening at Symantec right now ...... ...... and not everything is good.

I went to the Automated Support Assistant and found a new version which did three things:

1) It autodetected the version of my installed Symantec products.

2) It provided a new version of Live Update

3) It detected my NAV as a pre-release or another unsupported version. The strange thing is that NAV was installed as a part of NSW which had no complaints.

Now, with the release of XP SP2 ...... ...... I really think that the dog is wagging the tail(s).

...... and still no WMI update for 2002-03.

Everything was working fine. The only thing I keep getting from Automated Support Assistant is: I have an Older version of NAV and NIS. Do I want to Upgrade to NIS and NAV 2005. So now I can only live update manually it was Live Updating Automatically but it just stopped for some unknown reason.

Hi Christer...

I ran the Automated Support Assistant you linked to in your post. Like you I was able to update my LiveUpdate to a newer version (Ver. 2.5 according to Add/Remove Programs). It also mentioned that "You have an older version of Norton AntiVirus 2004". Interesting! I have an older version of NAV2004...OK!

You have an older version of Norton AntiVirus 2004.
The version of Norton AntiVirus 2004 on your computer is not the latest version. Upgrading will allow you to receive all the features of the current version plus a 1-year subscription service, which saves you up to 40% off the regular retail price.
Well, I played along and followed the "Upgrade Now" link to see where it would take me. The link takes me to the Symantec Store where I upgrade to the latest NAV which is NAV2005. According to the page Nav2005 will be shipping during the 2nd week in September.

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus™ 2005 is the world's most trusted antivirus solution.** It removes viruses, worms, and Trojan horses automatically without interrupting your work. New Norton™ Internet Worm Protection blocks certain more sophisticated worms (such as Blaster and Sasser) before they enter your computer. Norton AntiVirus can also detect spyware and other non-virus threats.

• NEW! Norton™ Internet Worm Protection stops certain damaging Internet worms at their attempted point of entry.
• NEW! QuickScan tool automatically searches for and removes viruses whenever new virus protection updates are downloaded.
• ENHANCED! PreInstall Scan quickly detects and removes infections that can interfere with installing and launching Norton AntiVirus.
I think I'll wait until it comes out in stores.

Kent,

Automated Support Assistant has always served me a lot of bull. It has always said that my NSW files aren't up to date but there are no new ones to be had through Live Update.
In addition to that, they always try to flog new versions, even if there are no new versions available. I bought Norton Ghost 2003 sometime last year and Symantec have tried to sell someting they don't have from the beginning.

I only use ASA to find new versions of LiveUpdate since that's the easiest way to get notified about them, nothing else. Well, that was a white lie ...... ...... I click through it when I need to go to their e-mail support!

Regarding lj50's problem, I have never received anything automatically, apart from virus defs and other defs pertaining to NIS. It is set to search for a connection every 5 minutes.

I also checked Add/Remove and found to my surprize that LiveUpdate was last run on 2004-07-15. I could have sworn that I ran it just an hour ago ...... ...... !

Yeah I kinda figured that...

Sorry, I miss-read your post...I though you said you did update your LiveUpdate...my mistake.

Anyways there is a new version (Version 2.5.55.0 update for 32-bit Windows LiveUpdate files) of LiveUpdate and it came out on August 12, 2004 => http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/cgi...2Flu%2Flu.html.

You can also download a 165 page PDF file on LiveUpdate.

For some reason, perhaps advanced age , I never have used Live Update for NAV. Rather I install NAV virus definition updates manually from this site
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/dow...es/US-N95.html
I know this is a little more trouble, but I get the updates several days earlier.

You read it right, I did install the new LiveUpdate version ...... ...... I just wanted to let off some steam because Symantec has managed to complicate things lately.

I checked my LiveUpdate folder and most of the files are 2.5.55.0. Others no indication.
It seems like this update was not a complete reinstall of LU but certain components were updated or added.

Me and my teflon coated memory would probably get them a few days later ...... ...... !

dobhar --Open NAV (Start|All Programs|NAV (0r could have another layer or two depending on your installation)). That should tell you the date of the latest Virus definitions. Mine is today, Sept. 3.

Hi Jim...

What Christer and I were talking about was not the date of our virus defs...we were talking about the date of the LiveUpdate program files in the C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate folder. If you go into your Add/Remove Programs you will probably see that LiveUpdate is 1.8 or 1.9. Using the link that Christer (in his post above) supplied I found that Symantec has a new version of the LiveUpdate program that they released on Aug 12. That verison is 2.5.55.0 => http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/cgi...2Flu%2Flu.html

I use a combination of LiveUpdate and Intelligent Updater (what you do). I manually updated my NAV defs to 09/03/2004 today using the 20040903-018-i32.exe updater file. I also post the latest Intelligent Updater file on my Web site, on my Virus page. I kinda got into a habit of checking the date of the Intelligent Updater file as I make sure my Company's AV (we use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition or SAVCE) is always up to date. It is part of my daily routine.

I tried to creat a new Auto update task and got this Message: The new task has been created, but, may not run because the account information could not be set. The specific error is: 0x8007005 Access is Denied. Try using the task page browse button to locate the application.

My folder looks approximately the same, most files last modified on 07/19/2004 and in addition there are:

1.Settings.Default.LiveUpdate 08/07/2002 (from the install CD)
ludirloc.dat 09/05/2004 (today)
LuResult.txt and SymantecRootInstaller.log 09/02/2004 (date of installing new LU)
