I,ve been bothered by a popup that loads after startup when no browser is open (?) and can,t locate it even with Adware or Spybot S&D. The thing just appears as a button on the task bar and eventually an and shows up on my desktop.
Please check this HJT log for any clues... heaven knows I,m clueless. Almost forgot! it's called Banner Farm.

It looks as though you have a peper infection. Download the following fix, saving it to your desktop, then double click to open. Then click 'Find and Fix' and reboot if prompted.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to the Administrator account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

Search for and delete any of the files listed here. To make the file searching a whole lot faster, you may want to download and install Agent Ransack. Far superior to XP's search tool.

Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows, you can re-enable system restore.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

Well that looks much better. Glad to hear things are working better now too. I also recommend you open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install and update. Check for updates weekly. Still in Spybot, click tools in the left pane, then click IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file. Then download and install IESpyads.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.

Sorry I took so long to reply but the kids came home from school yesterday and that was the end of my quiet time

I followed your instructions in your last post except downloading IESPYADS which I intend to do when I finish this. Everything is working well and I hope to keep it that way (yea right). Between AOL Msgr and the other junk my 15 year old gets into I'm suprised this thing works at all. I don't mean to ramble... thanks again.
