Explorer caused an error in unknown

I'm running windows ME and this is the error that I get when I try to open up folders etc.

At first I was getting this error message when I started up my computer but then I updated Ad-Ware and got rid of some spy ware and the error message didn't appear on start-up.

However when I go to open something the error message reappears. I do not have any restore points, I also tried the repair explorer tool and the selective start-up where I turned everything off and I was still getting the error.

Any Ideas what I can do now?

Hi taipan2000
Welcome to the boards.
After a fresh boot...do a ctrl/alt/del, and list for us what you have in the close programs dialogue box please?
Good idea, running Adaware. Now, download and run Spybot and allow it to rid you of what it finds as well.
Recent and updated virus scan? Do an online scan at Housecall.

Post back your results.

I ran a virus check using Norton and it came back with nothing.

When you try to end task explorer you end up getting the shut down screen which is odd.

However I believe that I have already solved the problem. I downloaded a program called spyware blaster. This program stops all spyware running.

So far so good. The error message is gone and I can gain access to my folders again.

Hi I'm back the problem isn't solved at all.

The explorer error message is still appearing. However I have worked out that if I uncheck 'enable third party browser extensions' the error disappears and I can open up my folders.

Therefore do you have any Ideas what third extensions could be causing this error ?

In addition to running your anti virus program, its a great idea to get an online when things arent right, so take Daizy advice and use houscall
then see here about posting a Log from hijackthis
How to post a Hijackthis log:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.p...20&postcount=4

And an exact error message would help to, mention also when it happens.

Can you explain a little clearer, exactly when you get the error? Does it happen opening ANY folder? IE My Documents..... Or is it only when going to say, the control panel?

Go to start...then run...type in: msconfig
Click ok...and go to the start up tab.... what all is checked?

The error started last weekend. The error would pop up when my computer would start. No folders would open as well as My Computer. Shortcuts for program files work ok and programs from the start menu.

I ran spy-bot and Ad-Ware and removed some spy-ware. The result was the error did not appear on start up. However when I went to click on any folder the error would pop-up again.

I then found spyware blaster and I ran that and restarted my machine. The error was gone and I could access my folders. I need to perform this task every time to avoid the error.

Until today when I ran the blaster, restarted and I was still getting the error.

Now I have found that If I disable 3rd part extensions the error goes away. But I need to disable this everytime I start my computer.

You have a Hijack, and it seems to be a BHO [Browser Helper Object, or the 3rd party extensions]. Apparently Spywareblaster is not doing good enough. I usually recommend using 3 or 4 programs to fix these kinds of problems. At times others are needed.
This is what I recommend.
First use CWShredder, using the Fix Option.
Then use Spybot Search & Destroy, reboot.
Then get HijackThis and unzip into it's own folder, click on Scan, when it is done the Scan button will change to Save Log, click on it and the log will appear in Notepad.
Post the entire log on here, and further advice will be given as to what to remove using HijackThis.
The links to these programs are below.
