Problems with Norton Antivirus 2003 XP

Hi: I have installed XP Pro on my computer. I had Win 98SE previously and upgraded from Norton Antivirus 2002 to 2003. I missed the part about uninstalling Antivirus first and then reinstalling on XP. I do have the disk.
When I tried to install Norton 2003. It detected the Viruscan all ready there from win 98, and would not install.(Win2003 Antivirus would not work when I changed OS. I tried to uninstall Norton Antivirus 2003. It went half way and stopped. Now when I try to uninstall it, program says necessary files are not there to start uninstalling. What do I do now. I cannot uninstall(it is not working) and I can not install it either.

 

Go Here and do a search for symclean.

Newt: Using the Norton System Works cleanup utility did not work. I got the same message as before.(Sorry, I forgot to include it last time). Error 1606 Could not access network location "\Documents and settings all users\desk top. when I closed out that box, there was another one behind that said Fatal error during installation. Evidently when I tried to uninstall 2003 from win 98SE. It did delete that. I do appreciate the help.
Any other ideas?

Download it, but run it in safe mode.

Then use search to find Norton*.* and Syman*.* and delete all.

If you know how to search the registy do it on 1st on norton and then on sysmatec.

reoot to full. reinstall

Thanks for the quick reply. The problem is I have done either one before. I haven't the slightest idea what to do.

 

Duane - here is step-by-step in case you need it

1. Download the app from Mike's link
2. Boot to safe mode and run the app
3. Open Windows Explorer and
3.a. Search for norton*.* and delete any files that are found by the search.
3.b. Same for syman*.*

Then boot to normal mode and try the install again.

Cleaning any remaining pieces from the registry would be nice but if you aren't used to searching the registry and making changes, now isn't a very good to start since it can easily cause major problems. Probably won't be necessary anyway.

I have downloaded RNAV 2003, but I cannot get into Safe Mode. I never had any trouble with 98SE. I have used the f8 key and the cntrl key on start up, but nothing happens. I am slightly confused. Am I supposed to run RNAV2003 or Service1 or both. I have not downloaded service1 yet.

 

Should be able to hit F8 while the progress bar is on the screen before Xp boots.

In fact only while it is on screen.

If for some reason it still don't work then run it in full mode.

If you mean run the RAV tool and do a find on norton and symantec. Yes do them both.

I appreciate all of your patience. It has paid off. Norton Antivirus is now working properly. I never was able to get into Safe Scan. I just ran the app. on regular mode. Thanks again. This is the best webb I have ever seen
