I have numerous relatives who have AOL and complain all the time. I keep telling them to change ISPs. What are they up to now per month? $23.00? I have $12.95 unlimited with a local ISP. I have read that AOL is the easiest ISP to spam. Check your local yellow pages and call them for what deals they are offering. You be surprised what they will do for your business.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions how to stop SPAM email,

Yup. get rid of it.( AOL that is )

Hotmail is no better. ( if not worse ) And MOST of the stuff that I got when I had Hotmail was just plain TRASH.

Outlook Express it not far behind.

My Eudora is catching up.

I sometimes wonder if a lot of address stealing is not done right off of our own machines via Spyware etc.

HURRAY for Ad-Aware and firewalls. They may not stop everything but they sure as hello help to keep things under control.

But the MailWasher that was suggested is a great help in at least stuff not getting to our machines. I of course personaly do not know if it would work with AOL or not.

MailWasher checks the mail on the server. It does not download it. And we can either delete ( off of the server ) or bounce and delete. Then the normal e-mail program has to be used to download the mail.

But I also was informed awhile back ( and rightfully so ) that if we bounce e-mail we could unknowlingly bounce a Virus back to a clean machine. I say this because some e-mail nowdays may not come from where it says it did.

And as a suggestion only, with no offense meant to anyone, and from experience I say to all PC owners.
"Watch what others are doing with your machine."

I say this because if they get hooked up with the proper site, the spam ( and other problems ) may be ENDLESS. Because one site leads to another ( wih no input from the user ) and then another and on down the line which seems to have no end.

These computers USED to be a lot of fun and enjoyment. But it is getting to the point that we may have to spend more time ( and $$ ) to keep the dam things protected and clean of unwanted trash.

Bottom line;
Unless we take steps to stop them, AOL, Microsoft ( and others ) know one hell of a lot more about us and our machines than we care to have them.

Well, knock on wood......I've had the same home email address for quite some time, and get little to no "spam", using Outlook Express, and have had no need to use apps such as Mail Washer. Though I do make use of my blocked sender's list when necessary. Both for the odd spam, and for people that insist on flooding my email once warned not to.

I find that there are some simple things we can do to prevent it. Starting with, and not limited to, not using your main address for anything that needs a subscription. My home email is used solely for personal correspondence. I use a web email for everything else. I'm adamant that others not "forward" me jokes and such....unless they've taken the time to use the BCC feature, or better yet, stripped out the email addresses. I find those emails a spam list waiting to happen.

More helpfull suggestions by Daizy

Yes it does relate quite a bit to how the e-mail preferences or settings ( or what ever ) are used.

But with AOL and Hotmail I never saw much choice in the matter. And even the availabe choices did not seem to work.

Speaking of DAISYS. I like Brown Eyed Susans the best.

Roses are Great.
Daisys are nice.
Good Friends are best.
But any Friend or flower that may brighten someone's day
Is just outright fine.

i am embarrased to say that it is not my quote! it's attrib Anon, that famous poet! (he sometimes sings in a group called "Various i think") (they changed their name from "Various Artists" at some point in the seventies).

The quote is in context though, it was definitely about AOL originally.

Found some additional info on Mailwasher for AOL:

Quote:
for some unknown reason the program treats aol emails like spam
Solution:
Quote:
Try going to the Tools Menu >> Options menu and set the heuristic strength to none. When the headers are first loaded into Mailwasher it checks the first 20 lines and it will indicate what it thinks the message is. When you preview the message Mailwasher will look at the first 400 lines and it often changes its mind as to what the message is. This can cause it to add check marks to the delete or bounce boxes when you close the preview window. Setting the heuristic strength to none will stop it from automatically add the check marks to the boxes.
