I believe those > are quote marks ( a reference to the message you received) at the beginning of each line. Nothing much (to my knowledge) to do other than DEL - "page down arrrow" - DEL - "page down arrow" - and so on ...
In Outlook Express click tools>options>send tab. Where it says mail sending format, click the plain text settings button. You'll find what you're looking for there. Just uncheck the line related to this.
If you are replying to a friend's e-mail, and not replying on a business matter, I find it is always nicer not to use the "Reply" button but to start a new message to them. This way their old message is not quoted and, to me at least, it seems more friendly.
We all have our little quirks, don't we?
r. leale--You do not have to have the original message displayed when you use Reply. OE Tools|Options|Send tab, uncheck "Include message in reply"|Apply|OK.
Of course if you prefer to make it easy to refer to the original message when replying (as I do) I leave that setting checked, and before I send, I highlight the original message and click Delete.
