I currently use Windows XP Home Edition with a broadband connection to the Internet.

The main problem is that I keep getting disconnected from broadband, ie, cannot get Internet/web. The two little boxes at the bottom right hand shows connected but then it appears "cannot find server etc.etc. "

Please can someone advise me as to why this is happening and how I can solve the problem.

    Thanks.

    :)

Hi, Gill, I have the same problem, we connected up the broadband modem today etc and it does the same as yours , also the "Internet "light on the modem does not light up ( flicks on when modem warming up).the two little PC's blink and it shows that we are connected ( speed etc), but only get " cant find the site ".
I rang the provider and they seem to think it is a phone line problem, they have contacted Telstra and they are checking the line , when I get it sorted I will post the results.
    Cheers Des.

I will let you know - although the broadband in question here has been connected for 3 years and was working perfectly well until 2 weeks ago. :)

    Hi Gill and Demon,

I'm having a very similar problem and I'll be interested to hear if it is the line at fault.

I have Windows XP Pro, a D-Link 502T modem and a new broadband connection that I can't seem to establish either. I too, get the 'cannot find server' page. My computer doesn't recognise the modem which leads me to believe (perhaps incorrectly?) I may require a Windows XP driver which I can't access because I can't access the internet!!

I've had this brand new computer for several weeks now and it's getting quite frustrating! Any help would be much appreciated - I'll give anything a go before I resort to calling in the professionals! :D

Are you able to connect up to the Internet with a dial-up connection for just a temporary use?

Yes, I can access dial up on my laptop no problem - it's just that it's my other new desktop computer and modem causing me grief. I don't have a dial-up modem which I believe is required to get online.

The broadband connection is active (as per my ISP)..the modem I've got lights up appropriately....Windows XP just doesn't seem to recognise it for some reason.

    My ISP is www.tpg.com.au.

I didn't get my modem through them and it's not on their approved list so I don't expect they'll give me much help at all. I think I'll have a few more attempts myself first, keep checking here for advice and if all else fails - then I'll try TPG.

    What/which firewall(s) are you using?

    I use Zone Alarm.

Does having a firewall active during BT Broadband installation affect or prevent installation? Should I be disabling it for the duration of the installation?

Hi. Gill & bella96, I have found the problem with my broadband modem, My Isp provider sent me another modem ( after 2 hrs trying different settings over the phone)and it was the same, everthing was OK but could not log onto the internet.
I rang them as I put on the new modem and we went looking some more.
We found that 2 boxes were incorrectly ticked, this is something to check.

Start/ Control panel / Network Connections / Right click Local Area Connections / Properties / Internet protocol(TCP/IP) Right click / Properties .
make sure that the Dot is in, " Obtain an IP address automaticaly" also " Obtain DNS server address automaticaly ". That fixed mine instantly.
    Hope this helps Cheers Des.:)
