    Hi,
My dial-up internet connection disconnects suddenly when I'm in the middle of downloading off the internet. I was wondering if there was any way I could continue my download after reconnecting to the internet. I have tried to download the same program four times and my internet has never been able to complete the download. The download will be at about 56%. Do I have to start from 0% again or is there some way I can continue downloading at 56%? I hope someone out there knows how to do it.
Thank you so much for any suggestions!

Hi kstaplet, what you need is Download Manager. These utils can resume from where the download gets broken.

I am using Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) www.speedbit.com. You can find more by googling - download manager.

Here's a whole list of them, complete with a review of pros & cons.

I use Download Express myself, FWIW.

kstaplet--I have always been a little wary of Download Managers since some of the first ones contained malware. Maybe the current selection is better.
However, here is an idea that may overcome the cause of your problem rather than offer a cure. And you do not need to install anything.
Have you tried to determine how many minutes it takes for the connection to be broken off? If it is a constant, it could be that your dialup service provider is closing your connection after a certain number of minutes of "inactivity ". Downloading a program often is not viewed as activity. (Neither is reading a website nor, often, typing an email.)

One way around this is to set your email program to check for mail every five minutes or so. That is usual perceived as "activity ". Another, less convenient, way is to keep coming back to click any key on your PC before that time period is up. Clicking is "activity ".

Jim, I have been using DAP for last 4 years & though its adware, it does not contain any malware.

Regarding your idea about the cause of the problem - in some parts of the world the dialup connections work like this only (most parts of India included), even if you are doing something. There is nothing that people like you and me can do about it - we have to just grin (actually grrr) and bear it.

IE supports resuming downloads. When you reconnect to the server, it will start where it left off.

If your ISP is disconnecting you, you may be able to work around that using Outlook Express. Open it and click tools>options and on the general tab, set it to check for new mail every 10 minutes. Then, while OE is open, try downloading the file. I used to do this when I was on dialup and it worked for me. Some ISPs may differ though.

I always had to start my download over from scratch with IE, until I installed a download manager.

Are you sure? It works for me. Keep in mind the server has to support it also although I suppose these days most all do. One more thing. If you have IE set to delete TIFs when you close it, and close the browser before trying to download the file again, it'll start over from the beginning. The partial file is store in IEs TIFs and will be deleted when you close the browser. If however, you reconnect before closing the browser it'll work. Either that or change the delete TIFs setting in IE.

To each his own. I have been using DAP for last so many years & don't want to risk any damaged file or wasting my time with IE built in support (even if it works for some of you). Never had problems with DAP so far & it works with most of the browser out there & most of the sites (DAP Premium at least).
