Disabling Virus Scanner and Staying Connected

Hi all,
I have a pretty short and simple question. So, here it is:
I need to disable my virus scanner for a game which stutter's if the scanner is loaded. If I disable the scanner while my computer is still physically connected to the internet (ADSL), am I at any risk of viruses or spyware getting into my system? I would, of course, have Firefox/Explorer closed and would not be accessing the internet during this period.

My System

Physically disconnect from the internet by pulling the ADSL cable out from your computer and then disable the av - that is 100% safe

Remember to re-enable the av before reconnecting the ADSL cable.

Thanks for that clarification Pete, I thought this might have been the case.
