Strange problem -winxp home, sp2 [variable cable connection speed]
All of a sudden my speeds are very variable, using comcast cable.
Sometimes it can be as high as 5934kb then it drops to 2334kb and
maybe even less than dialup. This can be in the same on-line session or
between system bootups.
Normal (ballpark) for my connection is between 4800kb and higher.
I noticed that in the network connections (in control panel) that i have 3
setups: a 1394 connection, a 1394 connection2 and a local area
connection.
I dont remember seeing a 1394 connection2 before.
While both 1394 connections use the same driver, they use different
interupts (17 and 19).
My internet circuits are on the motherboard (Marvell839) and go to the
external cable modem. I am the only user of this PC and no home network
is being used.
Question: What is the second 1394 connection? Is it needed? Any
assistance is appreciated as to connections and variable speed.

The 1394 connection is firewire and nothing to do with the internet at all - the question as to why it appears as a network connection has been asked before and AFAIK there was no answer.
I suggest you delete your firewire through Device Manager and reboot - see if that solves the problem.
The cause of variable connection speeds may have nothig to do with your computer, but with the line to the exchange. Would be a good idea to contact the phone company to check out the line or call comcast.

I uninstalled both of them and no ill effects since i dont have any firewire
hookups.
Zander - hope you understood that info on the link. Left me with a big
"?" over my head (lightbulb must have burned out!
Everything looks good on this end so guess i'll have to call headache
(or by its other name -comcast). I swear, i really break out the excedrin
when talking to them. Try to avoid talking with them but sometimes its
the only option left.
Let me impose with another question - If i buy an internet card and
disable the on-board Marvell internet via the BIOS, then all i need to do is
swap the external comcast modem wire to the new card, right?
I mean, does the external modem care where it plugged into as long as
its a internet card?

No, the modem doesn't care what kind of network adapter it's plugged into any more than your phone line would care what type of modem it's plugged into if you were on dialup. Should be able to connect the cable and go.
