I am switching over to DSL and need to know how it works. I realize the phone is not an issue anymore to reach the Internet. However until I get DSL setup, I am using the modem to reach the ISP.
Once the DSL is set up, does this take over the ISP and I can stop my access to the ISP. Or do I have to have both. They are two different companies.

With DSL installed you will connect to the Internet through your new provider - remember to let folk know your new email address :). You will no longer need your dialup connection, although this will continue to function should you require it. Under most circumstances this will no longer be required.

My own case is a good example of requiring both ....

One of my websites is on free webspace provided by my broadband provider (BT Yahoo) - the other is on another ISP and remains free providing that I connect to them every 30 days; thus I have their dialup connection on my PC - together eith two modems (ADSL and conventional). I can use both connections simultaneously.

On my laptop I have the broadband software installed and use the broadband connection while at home by just plugging the ASDL modem into a USB port.

However, whereas diakup can be used on any phone line, broadband cannot, thus when I am away from home I use the dial up connection for the same ISP and the internal modem to connect to the Internet.

Thanks for the reply. Now I understand how it works. I just got the DSL setup today and as soon as I get all old messages transferred to my online email, I will make the switch. I also have to change my email for the BBS cuz that will no longer be. I sure can't let that happen for when I need help, I have to reach out to you folks.
    Thanks again for explaining.
