Out of memory error unexpected

I started receiving an out of memory, disk full error message when trying to launch AOL. At first it would lock up the launching at various points. All other propgrams are running fine. I have about 6GB of 13GB disk space free and have 320 MB of RAM. I have done disc scan, disc clean, defragment, completely unistalled AOL and tried to reinstall AOL 9.0 from new disks. AOL 8 and 9 give me the error and lower versions won't load with Windows XP Home. I've ended all unnecessary running processes via task manger prior to launching but no luck. AOL tech support have not been able to resolve the issue and I hate to agree it seems to be on my end. The modem seems to be working. Any suggestions on what would be causing the disk full error message to AOL software?

Phone AOL.
I'm sure they deal with this all the time, and probably have the answer.
You're paying for 24/7 tech support, why not use it?
Most (if not all) of us don't use AOL, and never have.

Need more specific information. Try start~run~eventvwr.msc and check the system and application logs for related errors or warnings. If you find any likely suspects, open it/them, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (puts a text copy in your clipboard) and paste it/them here.

I would suggest another ISP. AOL is not always as user friendly as they make it out to be. I don't have AOL, but have helped many friends and switching help out in their situations.

Event Viewer Errors

Here are the errors from the Event Viewer. Note that in this saga I tried to load Norton internet anti virus software and the install is incomplete until it can make an internet connection. I know changing ISPs is a popular option but I get unlimited AOL dial up for only a couple a bucks a month. There are better ISPs and better connections but the price is right and I've had very little trouble with AOL up until now.

Your AOL software is corrupt, and has caused a major fault.

Again, I suggest you phone AOL, and report your fault log to them. It's their software causing the problem. If you're happy with these types of problems, by all means, keep using AOL

Some other stuff busted as well.

ASCTRM service - part of realplayer and a missing file

SAVRT - part of Norton's security app

169.254.101.152 being assigned to your PC after a DHCP failure - this is the address 2K/XP systems assign to themselves if they are set to look for some server to autoassign the values and can't find it. Is your internet via broadband or dialup? If dialup, are you part of a network at home?

The time synch failures are probably due to the same problem that is causing some of your other troubles and I wouldn't worry about it just now. It's minor and some of these others are not.

It looks like you have worse problems than quirky AOL right now.

The first thing I'd do is a full scan for viruses using a couple of on-line scanners. Not sure I'd fully trust Norton until this problem is cleared. RAV and Housecall are good.

After that, start~run~cmd to get a command prompt and then chkdsk /r to do a full file & disk scan.

Next, start~run~sfc /scannow to repair or replace any bad or missing system files.

Newt, I wasn't going to get into detail about ALL the problems on the machine. I wanted to a)Get AOL either fixed or eliminated, and then b)worry about reinstalling the ******* up apps later.
The IP assigned is another clue that AOL has gone south, and taken it's version of TCP/IP with it. Doing /scannow is going to royally mess up the AOL even worse, because it will set network protocalls back to default windows, and AOL will have to be reinstalled to overwrite them again.
Instead of me typing a novel, here's some additions to Newt's post:
Uninstall and reinstall Norton.
Uninstall and leave Realplayer off your computer.
Google for "realplayer alternative", install it.
Get Spybot.
Get Adaware.
Get a good registry cleaner.
Run the above 3 programs.
Reinstall AOL.
If you still can't get on the internet, phone AOL like I said in the first place, and get their tech support to help. You're paying for internet from them, it would be nice to be able to USE it!

Thanks for the updated info Reboot. I hadn't realized that an OS repair would hose AOHell worse than it is now.

Keith2 - are you getting an idea that AOL is not on our list of favorite ISPs? Good enough when it works and from what some UK folks have said, better over there than in North America. But they want to control your system and when they break it, to tell you it isn't their problem.

I have a number of grown children and get called for a little free "dad support" when they have computer issues. I finally told the two that ran AOL that I wouldn't even try to help them out until they got rid of it.

Unexpected Disk full Error

Now I know why I get unlimited dial up hours for 3 bucks a month; its the only way AOL gets customers. The computer is a stand alone PC and is not hooked up to a network at my home. I've been on the phone (8X) with AOL for hours and it is clear that this issue is not on their script and they don't have deep enough technical support. I did connect with MSN because of the free 3 months offer built into Windows XP. I bet I'll hear that they are the second worse ISP, shopping by price has not worked well so far. I removed realplayer, norton, ran chckdsk (no issues), could not find scannow. I'll get RAV, Housecall and completely install norton now that I've got MSN. If this doesn't work I'll stick with MSN or whoever. Thanks

Well, I'm glad you got a few issues sorted
Scannnow is a function of the command SFC.
To use it, you go to Start > Run > and type in: SFC /scannow
Note the space between the C and the /
Click OK.
MSN is actually quite high on the list of respectable ISP's. For beginners/casual surfers it's got plenty of help, and lots of online content if you use the MSN browser. I'm sure you will find it much better than AOL, although (because it's more like a "normal" ISP) you may also find that it's quite different, now the training wheels are off

Unexpected out of memory

The viruses have taken over my computer and it runs worse every time I use it. Finialy got MSN loaded and run the scan at RAV. It identified 14! including Bobax, Sdbot, Sasser.B, Rulerdor, & Sandbox. RAV was not able to clean up or disinfect. Still trying. May just take in to the store a have it done.

Purchase a good anti-virus scanner and load it. With any luck you'll get your system back, with nothing more than a few hiccups, which can be cured by an over-the-top install.
If you want to save a few bucks, and learn a few things in the process, keep asking questions here, and don't go to the shop.
You'd be surprised at what we can fix
Between the regulars here, I would estimate well over 200 years of combined experience in dealing with exactly the type of problems you are having.
