I have been advised to protect the registry using the free MS live safety scan
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/d....htm?s_cid=sah.
Bearing in mind the old adage "mess with the registry and you will die a slow and lingering death", would anyone care to comment on this registry cleaner (the one with the brush icon)?

I don't recommend any registry cleaner if you have no idea what you are removing from the registry.

Put it in another way: If you are an expert and know what you are doing you can use a registry cleaner to find registry keys you'd like to remove, but the programs generally (suggest to) remove too many items that will end up 'breaking' certain programs/functionality.

Thanks for that Arie, I'll leave well alone.
Having said that, yesterday, PeteC gave me some excellent advice which required me to make a change to a registry setting (see Forums>Hardware>"cd player wont play cds" (the last entries on page 2).
I guess the rule of thumb for those of us who aren't experts is NOT to touch the registryat all unless specifically doing so under the supervision of someone who actually is an expert and even then use something like ERUNT as a safety net.
