Our family gives our network (4x wired + WIFI / college kids) a workout ... I chose all options on the list. From an individual "primary use" .... In descending use.

INTERNET
E-mail ........... All of us.
IM ................. Kids
Social ............ Kids, wife.
Surfing .......... All of us.

Computer only
Everything else on the list.
Unfortunately, the least use is for school.
It is amazing how many "clothing sites" my teenage daughter can find / view. Last fall she was planning a major "in-store(s)" shopping spree (school clothes). She actually went through the store directory(s) /map to "plan her attack". I pity the poor sales staff when a female is on a mission.

Who uses PC and what for in our house.

Just me and I retired from a Computer company 8 years ago after working there for 40+ years. I use PC for most things except games and Music. I originally worked on developing the software that went out from the company with their computers. last 10 years of working learned all about PCs including installation and software. We used for communicating with the large scale computers and for developing the software for the large scale computers. Started with MS/DOS on some of the very 1st PCs and left when WinXP and Win 2000 started.

What is different for me today is that I knew so much more about how the large scale computers worked, their hardware, machine code, and software. It was much fun but I am far removed from that for PCs.

My husband retired 8 years ago from a computer consulting firm and refuses to even go near the Computer anymore.

I also use mine to help our grown children ( both in their 30s) when they have PC problems. They only use computers for work, email, shopping, music downloads and photos. Both son and daughter choose to only learn what they need to know in order to use their computers for work. Considering that computers and their development were responsible for their educations etc this I find a little frustrating. Even though, I know little re Vista helped my son and daughter-in-law set up theirs.

In addition I help friends and neighbors with their PC problems. What annoys me terribly is that when someone buys a PC in the stores they are told "you have to do nothing , everything is set up to go for you"

Computers @ home

Yep got them, the youngest daughter thinks I've got about 20, well at the moment we have 4 working desktops in use, 1 malfunctioning laptop & 1 desktop out on loan (spare from the shed), 4 in various stages of repair, 1 of those is a P3 SCSI with a 4 bay external case which I play with when I get time.
The Wife uses hers for most of the usual stuff, the daughters use theirs for music & social Networking, I use mine to keep upto date with the news & for fixing the others, when I get time I usually have music playing on it.

Computer Use at Home

I work from home, so I use everything except gaming. I like to use the internet to listen to my satellite radio stations while I work, and use the internet for all my research needs. I use MS Office to write my reports, and MS Excel to keep up to date with billings. I would be lost without the computer, and to think, just a little over a decade ago, nobody in my field used it. We used typewriters

Run my business (knots and knotting), teach same, do finances, keep track of business' and home's books, email, surf, buy and sell on ebay....heck, the only thing I DON'T do with the computer is.... ahhh... well.... (I may not DO it but I've sure accused it of doing it to me!).

I simply could not continue to live my current lifestyle without the silly box and cable... I'd have to go back to sea!

And, for that mater, I couldn't use the box anywhere near as efficiently without Windows BBS and other tech sites. Just reading the posts teaches me what NOT to do!

Computer use

Running Windows XP on a Dell Laptop.

I use my computer from home for e-mail, browsing the INTERNET, normal correspondence using MS Office Word and Excel.

Mainly, I use Ancestry.com for Genealogy searching and Family Tree Maker for recording my finds. Quite an undertaking.
