There is no requirement to format a CD before burning - just pop a blank CD into the drive and use your burning software to burn the data to the disk.

Provided that you burn to ISO standard - most software does this by default the CD should be readable on any CD-ROM drive.

    do cds need formatted ???

    Thank You,
i forgot to mention these Sony CD's are in Green label,if that means anything.
I believe you, and do not wish to start an argument, but it seems when i bought them 4 years ago with Pacific Digital burner that he told me they were only readable on burner thast made them. that was in a different town, and i do not know the Staples store clerks name anymore
yes i am a hard headed Yankee of German/Irish descent(which you may be thinking.)

Burning a CD disc ----- requires NO formating.
Burning a CDRW disc - REQUIRES formatting.

A CDWR disc can be erased and reused. You can no longer burn to a CD disc once full.

If I remember correctly, in old days (I guess, it was my Win98 computer burner), it required CDRWs to be formatted, first (I'm not sure about CDRs), and they could be formatted two ways. One, CD could be read only on the very same computer, and second option, readable on any computer.

Your burning program should have that option.
When you pop-in CDRW disk, it'll ask you to format.
What burning program do you have?

Start > Programs > Ahead or Nero > Nero Burn will start it.

Right click on Nero Burn > Send To - Desktop (create Shortcut) will give you a Desktop icon.

Your burning program should have that option.
If it doesn't, put blank disk into your drive, open My Computer, right click on your drive, and click Format.

While answering, drag your mouse over text, you want to quote (to highlight it), then look above.
In second row of tools icons, click on 3rd from the right (yellow page).

You won't - it is entirely separate from the Windows burning Wizard.

Initiate Nero from Start . Programs > Ahead/Nero > Nero Burn and burn from there - best to disable Windows burning software on your drive.

Right click on the drive in My Computer > Properties > Recording tab and uncheck (if checked) 'Enable CD recording on this drive'.

BTW - there is no need to format a CD-RW - just burn (to confirm this I have just dug out a new CD-RW and burnt to it directly through Nero). To erase the disk at a later date you will need to use Nero anyway - AFAIK the Windows software does not allow for this, but I stand to be corrected - as always :)
