We have had driverless cars in the USA for years. I have seen how some of the people drive. They might as well be backseat drivers and sit there also. :D

We have the problem in NZ that visitors to our country who drive on the RIGHT side of the road, are killing themselves and NZ'ers when they forget to KEEP LEFT.
So bring on the computer controlled cars. :D Neil.

Keeping to the left can't possibly be the right thing to do ... ... ?

We are mainly of English descent. Does that answer the question Christer? I've driven in many countries where you drive on the right side of the road and never had an accident, because I was consciously aware of the difference compared to driving on the left.
We have accidents recorded by tourists 15 minutes after getting into a Rental car!! Go figure - not paying attention - lack of driving skills - licence purchased in a dollar market - tired from long flight.
I think the problem arises when they overtake a slower car and forget to move back to the left. Neil.

Well, it was kind of a joke ... ... right meaning "correct ", a play on words but maybe you have to be "non English speaking" or even Swedish to understand. (For me... :p ... that someone left to the right is funny too!)

Prior to september 1967, we drove on the left side in Sweden. However, the cars were left hand drive (driver on the left side). I was only 10 years old at the time and had no drivers license but that must have been the most stupid arrangement, tourists or no tourists.

I've never visited Great Britain but from what I've heard, roundels are a problem, entering and exiting (for people doing it he "right" way).

Christer, we give way at Roundabouts to traffic on our RIGHT.
When driving on the Left side - you give way to traffic on your LEFT. ;)
We have problems in NZ where motorists are not signalling their EXIT road from the roundabout. Some drivers seem to think that others know/guess when they want to exit.
It gets more confusing with multi-laned roundabouts if the driver doesn't signal their exit point???

In Sweden (driving on the right side of the road), traffic that are in the roundabout have "right of way ". This means that any traffic entering a roundabout shall give way to traffic which is approaching from the left.

This is opposite to the basic rule where we give way to traffic on our right.

The situation is the same as in NZ but opposite and if we keep this discussion going, we'll find a way to blame computers and ultimately ... ...Microsoft!

They have just started making roundabouts here in the US and they are all confused. I was introduced to them in 1979 when I lived in Sweden for a year as an exchange student. My wife said somebody actually turned left onto one the other day.

I use to live in Miami Springs and there was one there and I don't ever remember a wreck. I am sure that there were some wrecks, but very few. That roundabout has been there for probably over 50 years.

James it is an interesting idea and will take some getting use to. It does seem to help keep the flow moving in most cases. let's hope they sync the lights. I know a few rednecks that will not be able to grasp the concept.
