On a Chinese forum, someone said that his friend had used an OEM version of Windows 7 on a new computer different from the old one to which the version was originally tied. How could it have happened?

I'm not exactly sure but if the original computer was defunct and unusable and he had the OEM CD/DVD, installing in a new computer it would probably need Microsoft Activation through phone call to MS.
I may be completely wrong but that is my thought. Neil.

    We need more information...

A Dell OEM DVD will work on any Dell... An HP on any HP...

If you call Microsoft - odds are they will activate it.

The only way to make sure is to contact Microsoft. Am I right?

Control Panel->SYSTEM icon.... The very last entry will tell you if it's been activated or not.

I mean the way to make sure whether my present OEM version can be used on a motherboard of a different model in the future when my present motherboard dies.

Matthew, my W7Pro 64bit DVD is a Dell disc and it runs OK in this comp. (see my System Details). I got activated by MS without problem. Neil.

Do you mean it is an OEM version tied to a Dell motherboard?
