We have a major rewire of the school happening in the Summer. In my time in IT support I have not had to work around a rewire before, what planning can I put in place to preserve the network and ensure services continue. I'm told that there will be staff needing network access during the period of the work. I suppose the good news is I have been asked at an earlyish stage and can ask for inclusion of such as a filtered supply to the server room.

Is the current network cable going to remain in place? So all you'd have to do is tell the electricians to NOT rip it out?

Yes network cables will / should not be part of the work as far as I know. It's just the mains electric cabling which has been mostly in place from the early 70's. My concern is the fact that they want me to keep the servers going throughout and continue with service as normal if possible. I'm guessing that at best the server room will be out of use for at least 3 days whilst they retire that. There is a suggestion of moving the servers to a completed part of the building whilst it's done but I suspect the establishment will be without mains electric for at least 2 days so it's trying to plan around that!
