    Hi

    (Firefox 3.6.8 + NoScript / Windows XP SP3)

I'm fond of Firefox (particularly with NoScript), but there's one thing it does which I would really like to stop:

...when typing in to the address field, if I type something which Firefox doesn't understand it goes off to Google and searches for whatever I've typed in.

But if searching for something is what I'm trying to do, I put it into the search field (adjacent to the right) !

I don't mind "suggesting from history" or "suggesting from bookmarks" while typing into the address field - that's quite useful; and auto-appending the http:// prefix or auto-completing the URL with .com, .co.uk, .org or whatever is good too...

...but running off to Google is something I'd really like to stop

is there a way to prevent this, please?

    TIA and best wishes, HJ.

Hi Westside :) thanks for the reply

you mean as in Suggest History/Bookmarks/Both/Nothing, I take it?

...I tried that (i.e. Nothing), but it still won't stop it legging off to Google

I have exactly the same problem with Opera, which *seems* to have an option buried deep in opera:config which looks for all the world (from its description) as if it should stop this very problem, but it doesn't

at the moment the only browser I can field which doesn't exhibit this behaviour is IE

    best wishes, HJ

    Hi again

    sussed it at last (phew)...

in about:config, set keyword.enabled to false

has to be done for each profile, it seems

doesn't seem to break the functionality of the "proper" search box

    best wishes, HJ

I will take a look at your solution. In any event, I never, noticed anything disturbing. I may not be pay attention at something important.

    Hi again

I discovered that the athough keyword.enabled makes a difference, what you actually get depends also (?more) upon the behaviour of the DNS lookup

I tried a few alternatives for DNS; using OpenDNS, keyword.enabled made little or no difference. Using my own ISPs DNS, keyword.enabled makes a large difference.

...in fact the way it's looking, the choice of completion possibilities: .com, .co.uk, .org etc. and the order in which they get tried is most probably down to the DNS server, rather than much to do with Firefox.

    best wishes, HJ
