installing firefox on Windows XP

I have Internet Explorer on my Windows XP computer. Can I install the firefox browser and have both IE and firefox on my desktop and choose any browser that I want and switch back and forth at my pleasure? If so, how exactly would I do that? Thank you very much. abm

 

Absolutely. Just install Firefox. That's what is so great about Firefox is that it is just a stand-alone application.

The only issue can be which one you choose as your default browser. That is, which opens up when you select a URL in another application. For example when you click on a link in an e-mail. You can choose either, and change to the other at a later date. Firefox will ask if you want it to be the default when you install it.

And then there is nothing to stop you installing Opera or Safari too if you like!

 

I am currently running Vista, but XP is not different in this regard.

I have Firefox (V3.0.1), Opera (V9.52), and IE (V7) installed at this time. FireFox is set as the default; however, I can still use any of them by explicitly invoking them from the Start Programs menu. In fact, I can use all three of them at the same time.

Yes, you could. I am using vista now. I am using 3 different browser
IE,FireFox, and Chrome. Like you i know a little bit about computer and i dont know
if there is a problem or effects when you use different kinds of browser...

The main job a browser does is send a request to a web-server asking for a given document and display the returned document. It can also handle some active coding in the page, but its fairly basic stuff. It isn't any cleverer than that.

So using a different browser shouldn't make a lot of difference. It's like opening a text document (*.txt) in notepad, wordpad, or word. All three programs will do it for you. You can also download programs like OpenOffice and Notepad++ and they to will show the file and allow you to manipulate it.

The difference between browsers is that different browsers use different rendering agents. That is they can vary a little on how they interpret a page and display it. Its like that *.txt document: it will look a little different in notepad compared to how it appears in word, but the document is the same.

So shouldn't be a problem running multiple browsers.

I have Firefox, Opera, and IE installed on my Windows XP Pro computer, and as others have already said, there's no problem, and you can use all of them, even simultaneously. Indeed, Firefox has an add-on available called IE View that enables you to see the same page in IE. If I come upon a page in Firefox that I want to see in IE, I simply right-click and select View this page in IE. IE opens to the same page. Firefox also has an add-on called IE Tab that will open a page using the IE rendering engine in a separate tab. I might add that Opera has a "view in IE" feature built into it. So yes, you can certainly use IE and other browsers, even at the same time.

The main question is why would anyone use IE ? It has always been a truly awful browser!
Set FF as your default and no worries. I keep IE on board as once in a blue moon I need to use it on the MS site if they are trying a bit of the old monopoly stuff again!
