Moving Netscape 7.2 from XP to Vista

I just bought a new laptop because the monitor on the old one was fried in a lightning storm (word to the wise get a surge protector that also covers the incoming modem line).

The new laptop has Windows Vista. I have to move my 3000+ emails in various folders and subfolders from Netscape 7.2 that ran on XP to the new computer that has Vista.

Because the old computer can no longer be used, I copied ALL 40G of the old hard drive onto the new computer and thus, have access to all the old files. They are in a folder on my desktop called "Old Computer".

I was able to download and then run Netscape 7.2 on Vista.

How do I go about configuring Netscape 7.2 running on Vista, so that I can access all the emails, folders and subfolders I had in Netscape 7.2 running under XP?

Thanks for any ideas!

Welcome to the Forum, Bilingual!

With Netscape closed:
Browse to the Mail folder of the new installation of Netscape:
Users\\Application Data\Roaming\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail

Rename the Mail folder to Xmail

Next:
Copy the "Mail" folder from your Netscape 7.2 backup to the *.slt subfolder of the new install.

In the event you've received Mail in the new installation of Netscape, it can be moved after you copy your XP Mail to the new install. Rename the Inbox e.g., Inbox2, and move the renamed file to the Mail Account folder. Ensure that Netscape is closed during this edit.

Let us know if you have any problems.

Moving Netscape 7.2 from XP to Vista

Thanks Ramona for your reply! I followed your advice, but had to do some additional things before I could see my old email.

These are the steps I followed to be able to see all my old email in Netscape 7.2:

1) I had to make all the hidden files visible in all the folders involved.
2) Then, I located the profiles by using the filepath you provided for the profile folder for Vista and the filepath for the profile folder in XP that I found at http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7profloc.html
3) I copied ALL of the salted (.slt) folder's contents (not just the mail folder) from the profile on the backup of my XP hardrive (path = Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\) and
4) Pasted these into the salted folder of the profile in Vista (path = Users\\Application Data\Roaming\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail where the profilename was Default).

I can see my old emails in the folders and subfolders now, but I can't access new emails yet. An error message saying that it can't connect to the pop server keeps generating. I am going to call my ISP about this, but if you have any ideas I would certainly appreciate them!

In another thread you had mentioned that one had to delete the files with the .msf extensions when moving a profile. Is that still the case? And why?

When Netscape reports that it can't connect to the server usually means there is an error in your settings. Check the ISP Support page, as most ISP's list the correct settings.

The .msf (summary) files contain the header information for Mail & Newsgroups, and are prone to corruption. When moving the Profile, it's best to let Netscape create pristine .msf files, therefore avoiding the possibility of corrupt .msf files.
