Thunderbird - can't send emails, also system slow

I'm helping a friend switch to Thunderbird. I've entered the pop3 account info and the incoming email works fine, but I can't send an email. I disabled all internet and email security on Norton, ran ad-aware, spybot, and AVG and still nothing. The ISP tech support is of no help. They just keep telling me to turn off firewalls. As far as I know, Norton was the only firewall. I'd also like to help my pal clean up his computer generally. Here's a hijackthis log. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Most of the time the tech non-support people don't know anything which is different from the script. The Hijack thing may be of some help, in the future, but, at this time, I would like to know what kind of server is being used. i.e.
smtp..... Is it one which requires authentication and/or is different from the standard port 25.
Slow system? Who knows, it could be anything.

Yes, the smtp requires authentication (ID and password are typed in correctly - I'm able to receive email), but I can't send out on Port 25.

I've disabled everything I know to disable: Norton and AVG.

I provided the HijackThis log in case you could see something else running that would interfer with Port 25.

Also, I'm able to ping the smtp server; I just can't send email out. There is a physical firewall in place (linksys router) and I'm able to send email out on Port 25 from other computers behind the router.

Have you enabled SSL? When you enable the secure setting, the Port # automatically changes.

I don't think your router is involved in any way.

I posted the HijackThis log in case it showed another application running, perhaps a firewall, that I wasn't aware of. I provided the information about my router so that we could rule that out as a possible cause.

I've tried turning SSL on and off. I've tried it with the default SSL port (465) and resetting the default port back to 25 with SSL turned on. The tech folks at the ISP suggested leaving SSL off entirely, which I also tried.

I've also tried other email applications, such as Outlook and Outlook Express and wasn't able to send or receive from this computer with either.

Any suggestions?

And, is it possible, that an ISP would require that you access their site through their ISP in order to send email? This is how SBC functioned when they released their early versions of DSL in the late '90s. I asked this of the ISP and they said no, but admitted that they had never had a support call from someone using their email as a pop3 account and not using their ISP, though I'm sure this must happen with most of their laptop users. The ISP, by the way, is Cal Ore, a telephone company that straddles the California Oregon border.

I never had so much trouble in getting info about mail settings, but I was able to come up with this:

There was no information about ports used. I would suggest to try Outlook Express, and see how it does. There may be some obscure setting, which are automatically included with a Microsoft program.

 

I understand, but you see, I am Hijack log illiterate! That's why I suggested you let the experts take a look. That being said, after taking a close look at the log, I see entries for both Norton AntiVirus, and AVG Antivirus. This could be causing a big problem, as it is unadviseable to run more than one AntiVirus program.

I suggest your friend uninstall one of them. If using Norton, then disable email scanning, and see if that helps in any way. Do the same if using AVG. It really isn't necessary to scan incoming/outgoing mail if auto-protect is enabled.

If the ISP doesn't require authentication, then Port 25 should work for non secure. The fact that you can't send with other mail clients would suggest that your settings are incorrect for Outgoing Server (SMTP). Double check settings with your ISP.

I don't understand the last sentence, either. That's why I gave the settings.
However, the fact there are Symantec and AVG item does not mean that we are dealing with two AV programs. The Symantec lines appear to deal with the Security software, but if disabled, it should not matter.
