Master password required for "Software Security Device "

Every time I first go online for the past couple of days, I get "Please enter master password for software security device." Anybody know what that's all about? And how I can get rid of it?

Have you installed new security software and/or device since this password request started. If yes, please provide details including which browser you are using. IF NO, check all of your security programs which auto load at startup for "auto-update" status.

Software Security Device & Master Password

I haven't installed anything new, Dennis. My browser is Firefox. My security is Avast!, and I don't see anywhere in it where I can indicate auto-update.
Thanx for responding. Any other ideas?

I have never used the following feature in Firefox, so I do not know exactly how the option interfaces with the user.
    Go into Firefox .....
    Options.
    Security Tab.
In Password section, do you have Use a Master Password ticked? If yes, when you open the browser, this will force you to enter a master password to allow access of any password's stored in Firefox password manger. If you do not want this feature, untick the phrase, ok the screen / options. Close Firefox, open. With luck, you are no longer prompt for "Please enter master password ".

    Master Password

. . . this will force you to enter a master password to allow access of any password's stored in Firefox password manger.

Dennis, I do use the Master Password feature, but, until this week, it only popped up when I needed to sign in to a site. Now, it pops up even on my Yahoo home page where I don't need to sign in. I'll try help through Mozilla. Thanks for trying.

Now we have identified which program is issuing the message. Yahoo sites can be frustrating per FF interfaces. The core problem is how a site manages your preferences and or log in. They generally start with a cookie(s). This can provide familiar views and setting when returning to the same site. Some sites require you to "Log in" for these features to be available or additional options, example submitting a post. This can also be managed by site cookie(s). Keep in mind, all of the above does NOT require interaction with Firefox's Password Manager..., thus no "Master Password request ". Then you have more secure sites, example Banks, placing orders via credit cards which will demand you enter a password manually or via a Password Manager. All settings require understanding of how a site works, which options you take, and proper interaction between browser, site code, and user. Trust me, these setting can get hosed and be very frustrating to get corrected.
    Good luck.

    Alice,

You may need to change the master password, in order to avoid the annoying popup. However, resetting the password will delete any stored passwords. To reset the Master Password in Firefox, type:

    chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul in the Location Bar
Click the Reset button in the bottom right corner of the window

If this doesn't work, you can remove the key3.db file from your Profile Folder.

Let us know if you need further help.

    Two new problems for me:
My personal Yahoo home page reverts to the default Yahoo page every time I reopen my Firefox 2.0.0.3, and yes, I have http://my.yahoo.com/ as my home page in Tools/Options.

But what is really bugging me is that I keep losing my passwords. Importing them from my saved file is successful, but upon reopening my browser and looking at Tools/Options/Security/Show Passwords, they're gone again! Yes, I do have Use Master Password checked.

I can live with the home page problem, but I hope someone can help me with the password problem.

    Alice,

As this is a separate issue from your password problem, would you mind starting a new thread for your Yahoo Home Page issue.

I have merged the two password threads, as you can see.

    Thanks!

Still getting request for master password when not needed

I'm still getting the popup, requesting my master password for the Software Security Device, even on sites that do not require a signon, like Google. Such a nuisance! I do want to keep the Master Password and saved passwords, but how do I stop the popup when I don't need it?
I've changed the master password, etc., as suggested above, but I still have the irritating popup. I hope someone can help. No one on Mozilla's forum could.

Throwing darts into the wind, since I do not use FF "Master Password" options. Let's try a test. Go into FF options and untick the option to "Use a Master Password" feature. OK out of menu's, close / open FF. Now travel to a site that is displaying popup "on sites that do not require a signon ". If no popup, we now know which option is causing the problem. Is your computer a "Single user" in which the option to password protect access to stored passwords is not required, but can be a user preference.
Keep in mind, your passwords are always available, the Master password feature just restricts who can use them. If you need this extra security measure, you could try 3rd party password managers, example RoboForm. Their is a limit (I thinks 10 passwords) for free or paid version which has no limit.

    Master password

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, well, Dennis, my husband and I are the only users of our wireless networked computers, but I thought the master password might keep our computers better protected against hackers. That was my only reason for having it. Before I removed it, what do you think about that?

    Restting master password

No, Ramona, I didn't try that because I would lose so much (stored passwords, etc.), and I'd already gone the route of exporting passwords, changing MP, and importing the passwords again, which didn't work.
I guess I'll just remove the master password and be done with it --- unless those of you with my experience than I think that wouldn't be wise. Our network is wireless, and I added the mp to foil hackers, in the first place.

If you are using secure wifi connections such as WAP / WAP2, router is not running default password you should be good.
