I cannot remove the search history in netscape 8.1. The clear search history bar is grayed out. I have checked "clear search history on browser exit" but this does not work either. The "clear all tracks upon exit" is not checked. The clear button on search history should be dark so it can be pressed to clear the history. Does anyone know how to remove the search history in NS8.1?

It is grayed out, but I have everything checked. So, I decided to check the Search History. There was nothing there. No sooner I entered an item, the clear search history became available. So, my question is, do you have anything listed in the Search History? You can't remove what ain't there!

    Welcome to the Forum, locker!

    locker,

From The Netscape 8 Unofficial FAQ

    19. How To Clear Search History

It would seems NS8 stores input field info in 4 places:

    1. (NS8 Profile Folder) SearchHistory.txt - Text from the Search Widget in the Toolbar (stored in Plain Text)
    2. (NS8 Profile Folder) ..r7u - FormFill Info, eg Passcards and Datacards (stored encrypted)
    3. (NS8 Profile Folder) formhistory.dat - Fields for pages viewed in Firefox mode that NS8 decides are not Passcards or Datacards. eg. Search fields on Google, Yahoo, Netscape etc, etc (stored encrypted)
    4. (IE Profile) not sure of the name - Fields from 3. that are viewed in IE Mode (not sure how its stored)

You can clear these out as follows:-

    1. When I right-click on the search entry box "Clear Search History" is the last menu entry and it works
    2. Options --> FormFill --> Delete what you don't want saved.
    3. The option to clear this is currrently missing
    4. The option to clear this is currrently missing

It would seem that its the lack of a clear option for 3 & 4 that is at the root of this and other related queries......

The lack of clear options for 3 & 4 is simply a bug, this function exists in Firefox 1.07. I suspect the Formfill implementation lead to its omission. I'm sure its been well reported and hopefully there's a fix coming soon.........?

In the mean time, there are some workarounds:-
    5. Can be cleared by deleting formhistory.dat from your profile. Click here for help finding it. See the bottom.
    6. Can be cleared via the usual route for IE:-

    * Internet Options => Content => 'AutoComplete' => 'Clear Forms'

IE default is 20 days for history pages, but how many do you recommend?

It's really a personal preference answer. It depends on the individual and no answer is a "right" answer. My own preference is for 7 days.
