How do i force Thunderbird to show images automatically inside an email? At the moment the mail loads but i then have to press the "Show images" button" to show it correctly.

    Thanks

    Hi Alex,

Open Tools > Options > Privacy. On the General tab, uncheck "Block loading of remote images in mail messages ".

(Personally, I think the better option is to leave it checked, and also check "Allow remote images if the sender is in my: Personal Address Book ".)

Also, on the View menu, make sure that "Display Attachments Inline" is checked.

I now have Images in my email body but how do I get them to size to fit the window? They are about 3 times too big.

    Bill ...

From the message window's menu, View > Image Zoom will allow you to change the size of an image in a message. The default is 100%, and I don't know how to make other sizes stick ... maybe in TB's about:config.

From the message window's menu, View > Image Zoom

Where would I see that? With a message open, I don't see an Image Zoom line.

In my case, I had always seen inline images which were occupying the page, or smaller. It could be a case of how the sender sends the image. for instance, I could send a very large image with 300 DPI, while it gets smaller as the DPIs are lessened.

See the screenshot. (The menu is vertical, rather than horizontal, because I use the TinyMenu extension.)

An image sent in an email should almost always be resized ... I usually resize mine to no more than 800 pixels wide, for two reasons:
    1. I always send them inline, rather than attaching them.

    2. because so many people still use screen resolutions of 1024x768 or less.

Unless I'm greatly mistaken, Westside, that's not true. I can create an image at X DPI and save it at Y DPI, but the physical dimensions remain the same. What changes is the file size, not the image size.

    image zoom

    Jim,

I don't have the option for image zoom either.
Using Thunderbird 1.5.0.8, under file > view, I have text size followed by character encoding, no image zoom like your screen shot shows. You must be getting that option from an extension. I like it, I want it, so please tell us what extensions you have installed.

    Thanks Gordon

I will echo Gordon. We don't have the view item you have.

I installed TinyMenue and it makes no difference.

Jeez, guys, as my kids would say, "My bad!" Honestly, it never occurred to me that the menu selection might come from an extension! Duh!

I have had Image Zoom installed for so long that I never thought of it. As you can see from my previous screenshot, it offers a lot of options ... even more in the extension's options. Works with Firefox, too.

    Addendum:

I just ran into a little situation that hasn't happened to me before, so I'll pass along the information gleaned from it.

I uninstalled Image Zoom, just to verify that it was the source of the main and context menu entries. After reinstalling it, the context menus were available, but there was no View menu entry, as seen in my post #6.

To make a long story, I uninstalled all nine extensions I use with TB. After reinstalling Image Zoom, the View menu item was again available. After reinstalling the other eight extensions, it was still available.

In an attempt to determine which extension might be interfering with Image Zoom, I repeated the process, uninstalling Image Zoom, then reinstalling it. Once again, the View menu selection was not present. As it happened, the first extension I uninstalled, about:config 0.6, proved to be the culprit. Talk about good fortune!

    Thanks Jim,

But I am still having a problem. I installed the Image Zoom extension into Firefox, both my wife's and mine. It works great in Firefox, but we still don't have the option for image zoom in Thunderbird. How do I activate this feature in Thunderbird? There must be some simple step that I am missing.

IYou have to do everything from the TB extensions dialogue box. If you DL the extension then open TB and Tool>Extensions and click on install. You can then browse to the place where you put it.

I think I see my problem. I have Thunderbird and Firefox installed in different folders.
    The paths to the extensions are;
    E:\mozilla\ firefox\extensions\1A2DCEC4___\chrome\imagezoom.jar
E:\thunderbird email\extensions This extensions folder is empty.

I set it up this way because I wanted separate browser profiles for each of us, but we share the email.

If that is my problem, then how should I install the image zoom extension into thunderbird? Is it as simple as just copying the extension into the Thunderbird extension folder or is there more to installing an extension?

    Hi Gordon,

Even though ImageZoom works with both FF and TB, it needs to be installed in each program separately.

Bill provided one way to install the extension in TB, but there's another.

Assuming that your OS is XP, the file you downloaded should be imagezoom_0.2.7.xpi (I noticed that yours is imagezoom.jar). Right-click on it and select "Open with..." from the context menu. If TB isn't in the "Other Programs:" list, click the Browse button and navigate to thunderbird.exe. It should install with no difficulty.

    Thank you gentlemen,

I did a quick and dirty copy of the entire extension folder from her Firefox to her Thunderbird and it worked, this time. However, I can see where that is going to be problem going forward when we have a need/want for different extensions.
Thank you both for the correct way to do it. I will undo what I have done and install the Image Zoom extension the correct way now that I know how.

    Hi Gordon,

Glad you got the problem solved. Actually, the only time I use the method I suggested is to install MR Tech Local Install, which really is an extension manager, and is the first extension I install with either FF or TB. After that, I install all additional extensions via Local Install (basically the way Bill suggested).

Local Install is the one extension I think everyone should use. If you aren't familiar with it, I suggest you give it a try. Because the interface can be rather intimidating, see this post for the only settings I think are important for the average user.

You and your wife probably will have to compromise on extensions for TB, since you both use the same mail folder (which is part of the profile) but, IMHO, there are far fewer really useful ones for TB than for FF.

That shouldn't be a problem with FF, though. Since you maintain separate profiles, you each can have the extensions you find most useful.
