I am looking at an old problem with a new set of eyes. I've been having trouble viewing archived email off a CD.

Ramona told how to create an email archive on CD in a great Netscape FAQ item called "Archiving and Accessing Netscape, Mozilla, and Thunderbird Mail on CD" http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/archivemailcd.html
Then there was the old thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=58312&highlight=archiving+email

My question at the moment is this:
In the FAQ item, when Ramona talks about burning the CD, she says:
"Use a rewritable (CD-RW) CD. Otherwise it won't work! "

Does that mean that email sitting on a CD-R CD won't be viewable from Netscape? (Guess what I burned my archive to!? )

And if it can only be CD-RW, I'd love to know why? (Guess: Netscape wants to see a drive that looks as close as possible to a hard drive? Reads, writes and re-writes over itself?)

    Thanks, folks!

The CD-R will be ok, but you will not be able to keep your mail up to date. And, I think that it makes sense, since you have to rewrite the CD every time that you get new mail, or delete it.

Hi --- Having the archive on CD-R would be OK since my CD would archive a whole year and just need to be viewed.

    Valid point.
Ramona is still under the weather, but, I got this from her:

Yes, you can view mail on a CD-R from the Mail & NG on any gecko browser. However.... the catch is, that you cannot, add mail, delete mail, or Reply and Send Mail. On a CD-RW you can Add, Delete, Reply, and Send Mail.

If using a CD-R, set up the dummy account exactly as outlined on my Solutions page:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/archivemailcd.html

The setup is the same for either type of disk, but I thought my idea to be able to reply and send was the cat's meow for archiving. That was my original innovation.
