Problems getting Firefox 2.0 to insert username/password
I just installed Firefox 2.0, and all of a sudden, my username/password isn't being inserted in the signon window (it always was before). I tried the usual suspects--I did not mistakenly tell FF not to remember the password for this site; and I also tried the remember password bookmarklet, but all to no avail--FF will not ask me to remember this password. What do I need to do to get around this?

Steve, perhaps this is how it is done when you check the box for your username/password info to be remembered, but the password manager in Firefox does this without using permanent cookies--its a separate function, which worked flawlessly at this site until 2.0.
Perhaps this is a Mozilla problem and not a site problem? Perhaps this is not the correct forum for this question.
I started a thread in the WindowsBBS forum, but haven't gotten any responses that have resolved the issue. Anyone wanna take a look? Please post there so there isn't a duplicate thread. I only posted here b/c I think it is a FF 2.0 issue, but it only seems to be affecting this site. Mods, if you want to lock this feel free. Thanks.
By the way--FF is acting like it does when there are two saved passwords for a particular site--it won't insert anything until you select the particular username. Therefore it must be in FF's memory somehow, but I haven't been able to find it in the stored passwords; it just appears when I type in/select the username. Strange, which is why I'm thinking there is some option that is new for 2.0, that I inadvertently checked.
I merged both threads, as this is more a Firefox issue. As Steve said, the Windows BBS cookie controls the user name/password. Could it be that your cookie is corrupt?
Go into Tools | Options | Privacy
Click on the "Show Cookies" Tab find the WindowsBBS cookie(s) and remove.
Now close Firefox, reopen, and enter your user name and password, electing to remember the password. You should now be able to open and close Firefox without having to re enter this information.
Now look in your Passwords in Tools | Options | Security
You will see there is NO password for WindowsBBS...
The Password Manager is the same in 2.0, and it was in 1.5.0.7. What was your setup in 1.5.0.7? I'm not perfectly clear on what you were doing...
OK Ramona, I'll check the cookie later on at home. What made me think that they were two different functions was that I have FF set to delete cookies after closing the browser, and windowsbbs isn't one of my exceptions, and the username/password have always been in place. But I will do the delete and replace cookie for windowsbbs and see what happens.
If you delete cookies on close, then I would add WindowsBBS to the white list, as you know it is a trusted site... Then there would be no need to log in every session.
OK, as I figured there was no WindowsBBS cookie, as I had FF set to delete it when FF closes. I did as Ramona and Steve suggested and allowed the cookie, and now I am no longer asked to log in.
Gotta admit I'm still curious as to why the password manager wasn't working, but its irrelevant at this point. Honestly since I delete cookies whenever FF closes, I don't really think about them at all and figured that they had no role in this solution. Thanks to you both.

Hmmm well same old problem again. I have www.windowsbbs.com in my exceptions (which allows cookies for FF). I found one instance of the password in my password manager. I removed it, then FF asked me to save it the next time I logged in. Still teh same problem--it won't enter it automatically, but as soon as I enter the first letter (p), the rest appears, allowing me to select it, as does the password. Any other suggestions?
Hmmm I removed it from my cookie whitelist, and the password from the password list, and I cleared the cache, and still the same problem. Very strange.
