Unhappy Thunderbird 1.5.0.1 graphics lost

Hope I can explain this clearly. When forwarding emails, any graphics on the email are lost. I can work around this by manually reinserting each graphic. The location description of the graphic is different between that of the automatic forward (which is lost) and the manually inserted graphics.

Here are my location descriptions:

Auto forwarded (lost graphics):
mailbox:///F%7C/mozprofile/rdavis-cape-F/*.slt/Mail/pop.isp.net/
Inbox?number=16316772&part=1.2&filename=image0011.gif

Manually inserted (graphics survive):
mailbox:///F|/mozprofile/rdavis-cape-F/*.slt/Mail/pop.isp.net/Inbox?number=16522214&part=1.2

Hope I've included enough info. It's sometimes just too many graphics to manually insert. Not an earth-shaking disaster; just annoying.

Any ideas out there?

Bob

Oops!

My memory is wanting folks. At my age, I guess it's to be expected. The Thunderbird version I'm using is 1.5 NOT 1.5.0.1. Got Firefox on my mind. Sorry,

Bob

Graphics are usually in HTML format. Are you set up to send your mail in HTML?
The location which you mention do not ring any bells to me.

Westside,

Thanks for your response. Yes, it is set to send using HTML. There is a difference in the very beginning of the locations info. Note that in one case, it shows F:\\ while in the other the colon is missing (??). Strange.

Bob,

In Options do you have TB set up to foward as attachment, or forward inline?
Tools | Options | Composition

Try forwarding as "Attachment" and see if that works for you.

Hi, Ramona,

Tried you suggestion but without success. The attachment simply wont open.

Found a work-around on another BBS (don't remember where) that suggested using 'Reply' vice 'Forward' and edit the addressing and text as required. It worked, or at least I sent a test msg to myself and the received email displayed all graphics properly. The writer also commented that this was an established Thunderbird 'bug' not yet fixed.

Looked for the bug on Mozilla pages but could not find anything -- that I understood, that is.

So far, the work-around seems to work. Can you duplicate my symptoms?

Bob

I forwarded the e-mail, inline, from Seamonkey1.5a, and it was received with all the pictures, as well as headers. I made no attempt to forward as an attachment. Now, I have to see the other way around.

I may have to start with a clean forward, but the forward of the forward from TB1.5 to Seamonkey produced nothing but the header. There were three picture below. I would not expect to see much from the original, which is, apparently in the temp folder. Seamonkey did not try to send any file.
I tried to use, also TB1.0.7, and it worked. When I forwarded the same e-mail from 1.5, the picture showed up, but the size of the file was about half.
There is another issue. In Thunderbird, images are, generally, blocked, and there is a button to unblock them. However the first forward showed the images without hitting the button. That was the one which did not send the images. Now, why the forward from TB1.0.7 was much larger than the one sent from 1.5 is more than I want to think about. The settings of all programs was to send inline. And, with the e-mail which required hitting the Show Images button, there was no file attached.
So, was TB1.0.7 doing, in forwarding the same e-mail which failed to show images from TB1.5 (and had images visible without hitting a show images button). No problem.
It is a definite TB1.5 issue. It took me about an hour to check this out, but it was interesting.
I don't know if I ever said that I do not like to forward, and give people who want to print, half a page of addresses. I always edit e-mails.

Bob,

I can't duplicate your symptoms on Windows 98. You can also select "Message | Edit Message as New". I was hoping that changing the "Forward as" setting would work.

I can forward attachments and images inserted without a problem, altho a friend with Windows XP could not. I found these bugs:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301347
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301189
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206278

You may want to take a look at the Bug Search and see for yourself...

Talking Resolved TB 1.5 bug with a work-around

Ramona,

Thanks for the info. The bugs you sent are certainly related to the one I have. All of them recommend re-attaching the attachments. Which I discovered will work as well, but if there are many pics, it becomes quite cumbersome. It's so much faster to just use Reply, edit addresses and text and go!

Sent test to several of my old cronies around the country. They are now getting all the forwarded graphics 'loud and clear'.

My Thanks to you and Westside for your efforts. As Always you guys -- and gals always seem to come thru with effective advice.

FWIW, I couldn't duplicate Bob's problem, either, using TB 1.5 with XP Pro. I've always been able to forward messages containing images without difficulty, although like Westside, I generally "Edit as New" to remove the extraneous info.

It should be noted that (on my system, at least) images do not appear in the composition window for a message to be forwarded or edited, but do appear in the sent message and the newly received message.

Actually, edit as new does not work the way I want. I just worked with as message sent to about twenty people, a triple Fw. Edit a new, was like a Reply to, with all addresses listed. Each one was to be sent to, and had to be removed individually. The text (Inline) did not change, and would have to be removed. The attachment remained, and, if removed there was nothing there.
If I used the Reply method, all I needed to do was to ender a single sender, and delete the multiple lists in the text. The pictures were there Inline.
Note: I had never used the Edit a New before, but it looks clumsy.
I sent in HTML, just to myself.

Westside ...

I learn something new every day, and it usually comes from experimenting (read fooling around ) with a program.

It never had occurred to me to use "Reply", rather than "Edit as New", but it really does work much better. Thanks for the tip.

Jim,
it is interesting that this issue came up, because my wife started getting several forwards from one of her sisters, which, among other things had the usual :send to 12 other people in the next seven days, and you will have great luck between 1 and 4 PM I am not making it up.
In the past, I used to copy text, and paste it in a third party utility. But only Reply worked smoothly. I have often sent my revised version to the originator, thanking for the thought, but I don't want to have all the names listed.
I never got any such forwards again.
I tried the Edit as new, and it took me minutes to do to an edit message as new.
