I have no real experience with this... when they have a version available via FTP, does that mean it's an official release and not a beta/test build even if they havent updated their webpages?
Yes, this is an official Release, even tho not yet on the Mozilla Releases site. If it were a Release Candidate there would be an "rc" in the program download file.

Thanks Ramona... as it turns out, a few minutes after I posted, the websites were updated as well.
Still had a bit of a problem using my old profile and had to create a new one as well as ithe installation hanging for a while and never initially loading mozilla
But all seems ok now.. i'm just getting a chance to take it for a spin now.
The only time I had a problem, was when I tried to upgrade from one version to the next, without uninstalling the previous version. In fact I still use Moz1.7.5 profile.
Yea, I never had problem until the last two releases... for whatever reason, my main menubar would disappear as did my personal toolbar intermittently for instance... since it only takes a few minutes to create a new profile and copy mail etc into the new profile, i just created a new profile and reinstalled my extensions instead of trying to track down the culprit
