netscape 7.2: "sent" folder empty/lost, also another folder the same
Hi,
I had upgraded from communicator/netscape 4.7x to netscape 7.2 several months back. All was fine till tuesday 7/5/2005 I log in and noticed my sent folder was empty, also another work related folder is empty:
My Sent folder from my 6/9/2005 backup is a 65M+ file with thousands of messages
My csgfld folder from my 6/9/2005 backup is a 99M + file with thousands of messages
I saw that my disk space was almost gone when i noticed these folders were "empty". Please advise.
Did i hit a netscape bug?
Did i hit an upper limit to folder size in terms of messages/Megabytes?
Did netscape zero out these files since I did not have diskspace instead of just warning me?
Am i stuck with losing 3 weeks worth of email in my sent and csgfld folder?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Where do you see or not see those folder? If they are in the profile/account folder, on the the hard drive, I get this much: there is nothing in the present Sent folder (the one with no extention), and the Sent.msf(header file) is also at its lowest point. The Sent.snm folder should not be in the same location, since it is related with NS4.x.. and it is huge.
So, how do you see all the files which you mention? Is this from a Search, which would explain why you have a mixture of 4.x and 7.x files.
Depending on your answer, you may have a hit a known bug, since the files with extention are the ones which can get corrupted, and, the solution is to delete them, from the hard drive, with you program open. Only the files with no extention contain your data.
Your back up has what you want, but, as you say, it would not have the more recent stuff.Maxing out? No way. I have heard of people having problems with 1GB or more. But, it is unwise to keep so much stuff in one file.
I have no idea what disk space you are referring to.

These are all in the "Local Folder" as defined in my Netscape--->Mail and Newsgroup Settings ----> Local Folders

When I upgraded from 4.x to Netscape 7.2 I just copied ALL the files to the new "local folder" location from a backup.....i now understand that the *.snm files are from 4.x--from what you just said

Disk space is my laptop C:\ drive diskspace. My "theory" is that when I maxed out on my disk space(which i did not notice right away), as netscape was downloading my "sent" mail to my Local folder("My sent folder is under Local folders"), then when it ran out of disk space, it just zeroed out the file?
Same with my csgfld folder under my "Local folders".
Any suggestions please? Or did I lose my data forever in my "sent" and "csgfld" folders?
The only way that I know how to work with mail, is to set up an account. Then I can copy the desired file, with no extension only, and paste. I never do this to an Inbox file, because it would either overwrite present active files, or just be lost. I hardly ever used the Local Folders, except to Import info from OE, Eudora or NS4.x.
The header files should always be deleted, or just not copied, because they do not serve any purpose, kind of out of context. As for deciding where the Sent mail is stored, you look in your Mail and New Accounts|Account|copies and folders. If you have an acceptable path to store your mail, you should be ok.
But, it is not enough to copy/paste messages or folder, for Netscape to know what you want.

If you have done a thorough search of your HD, and found only what you posted above, then I would say that you have lost that Mail. If you are out of disk space, then I don't think I would risk your backup without first copying it to a backup media.
