    Can I delete "PREF.JS" files

    Ramona/Westside.;
Just wanted to thank you for all the help trying to reconstruct NS aftrer the inadvertant 7.2 install.
Almost all thing are complete and working.
    Just onequick question.
It seems that after any or in fact all change preferences, or relocation of mail files there is another "pref.js" file. in *.slt folder
I now have approx 52 of them. Is this a normal thing, can I selectively delete some of them?
Again thanks for the past info.

    Roy,

You have 52 prefs.js files in the *.slt. In my wildest imagination, I can't conceive how that could happen? Or do you have 52 Profiles?

I keep hearing of multiple bookmarks.html files due to corruption. Why not prefs.js? I would open a few with Notrpad or Wordpad, right click|open with and see what is in each. Just a quick look. But, I think that this calls for creating a new profile.

    prefs.js

    Hi guy's
Bet I could come up with something out of the usual.
I only have 1 profile "default" and I noticed that every time I changed something in the mail folder .(Remember I was trying to recreate my mail from the melt down) every time I went back to the Profile location and looked in the *.slt the prefs.js had multiplied. see attached paste from # 47.
They all seem to be the same and now there are 57. Anyone want a beata tester that is capable of crashing anything.I have deleted any reference to my personal info. but this is the file verbatim.
    Anything jump out at you.
    ???????????????????
By creating a new profile and they transporting items (mail etc.) from the saved profile, the one with this problem, won't I be just recreating the same situation

I would not dream to go line by line over your file(s). Just create a new profile following Ramona's website link. I can't see that you will repeat the same feat in another profile. Just give the new profile a different name. I remember having problems with an early NS4.x, and was using imaginative name like default1,2 ,etc. to the new profile. Just set up it up as it with its minimum stuff, set up your mail, and only then go at it to copy manually, the old mail. Address book and bookmarks, and whatever else is listed. Just don't copy that wacky prefs.js file. Just should be able to delete the prefs.js files, but something is causing it. Just go easy copying/pasting your old files. And, try to export your Address Book as a .ldif file, which can be easily imported.
    And, especially, good luck.

If by multiple prefs.js files you mean files named prefs-1.js prefs-2.js etc in addition to prefs.js then, with Netscape OPEN:

Right-click the prefs.js file and select 'properties'. Is the prefs.js file read-only? If so, UNcheck the "read-only" attribute and delete it (it will be regenerated). You may want to save the most recent copy of prefs-n.js as a backup (rename to prefs.JS.BAK or similar). Then delete all the "extra" prefs.js copies.
    See:

    prefs.js

    Thanks all.
I found that I can in fact delete all the duplicate prefs.js files without any adverse effects. An the file is now also corrected. There was a prefs.html.moztmp that as sugested was causing the spawning of the duplicates, (kind of like Mr. Smith on Matrix) which is now also gone and all seems to work fine.
I have created and stored the current correct backup on CD for future reference.
    Thanks for all the help.

I didn't know that a prefs.js "moztmp" file would be created if prefs.js was read-only, as happens when bookmarks.html is read-only ..... thanks for the information, but are you sure it was prefs.html.moztmp and not something like prefs.js.moztmp?

Check all the other files in your current profile, just in case others are "read-only ", especially if you copied files to the current profile from CD-Rom. Remember to remove any "read-only" attributes when copying files from a CD-Rom backup, or zip the backup files first, before copying to CD-Rom.

    prefs.js

No I am not sure of the exact extension for the file. It is now gone so not an issue, you may be correct on the actual extension, and I will check attributes for all the other files.
    Thanks.

I must have done something, and message is gone. So, this will be short.
I went over the pref.js file, and, I saw the same type of anomaly, twice:
    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.directory ", "C:\\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\\D******\\APPLICATION DATA\\Mozilla\\Profiles\\default\\qhls5f48.slt\\Ma il\\Local Folders "); Can "Ma il "
    cause all these problems?

    Westside,

It may not have been at the root of Roy's problem, but definitely could cause a problem. I'm surprised he didn't get a syntax error.

    delete prefs.js

I think that Mike hit the mail on the head.
The pref.js was in fact read only.
Since changing ALL the attributes I am up and no more spawning of the file. Possibly post as "BUG" fix. as this happens to prefs.js and not just bookmarks.html files.
It seems that this was the fix I needed
    Thanks All

    Mike,

Excellent "Find" on the Bug, and one I haven't yet seen appear. Thanks for adding to my FF knowledge...

    Westside,

The "Ma il" that you mentioned, after rethinking, is a BBS thing. I've noticed that this happens often when using a string, or link.
