Missing .ssl Files - Firefox?
I don't know if anyone here can help me with this... I'm running Firefox 1.0.1 on Mac OS10.3.8... which is based on Unix so hopefully...

When I ran some maintenance scripts last night I got a raft of missing files... .ssl files... Secure Sockets Layer which is I believe generally a Netscape type thing.

Has anyone had problems with missing files of this sort? The only Mozilla product I've got on this machine is Firefox. I remember way back when (vaguely) of going somewhere with Netscape to download 128 bit encryption etc...

This is part of the log:

Thanks Ramona... that's the site... unfortunately there's nothing there to replace the missing .ssl files.

I know Firefox has 128-encryption... I'm just stumped as to what happened to all those files... they're invisible files which I can find with some prodding... but all that's left is aliases (shortcuts) to the originals...

According to the Fortify site... out of the three browsers I have installed... Safari, iCab and Firefox... iCab has the strongest encryption of the three... 168-bit...

Where does one file bug reports for Firefox?

v1.0.1 definately has a problem with Java on Mac OS X...

They don't make things easy, since nine times out of ten, there is no bug, or the bug has been reported. It would be at the mozilla.org website.
In PCs, at least, there should be a ssl3.dll file in each program.
What version Java do you use? I have had to copy manually the original Java plugins, but the update to 1.5.02 did not require any intervention from me.

Thanks Westside... I managed to round up an answer to Java error in OS X... it turns out to be something I'm familiar with but had forgotten because last time it came up was way back under NS4.7x... in order to use Apple's Java properly you need a plugin available from used to be Mozilla now it's on a separate site..

Mac OS's have their own version of Java... on OS X I'm running Java 1.4.2 (version 2) it's called.

But yes I'll have to download the plugins and install them manually...

Where exactly do you find that .dll on a PC? It might give me some hint of where to look on my Mac... I suspect the aliases lead back to a file called "pkcs11.shlb" which is a shared library... but I don't know why I can't see the originals when I ask to...

The Java Plugin DLL files on a PC are found here:
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin (I have Ver. 1.5.0_02)
Yours would look something like 1.4.2_02

NPJava11.dll
NPJava12.dll
NPJava13.dll
NPJava14.dll
NPJava32.dll
NPJPI150_02.dll (Yours would look something like NPJPI142_02.dll)
NPOJI610.dll

You should be familiar with these kind of folders. The path of mine is :C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin
The desired files are npjava...dlll and NP...dll The latest one for 1.05.02 went in the profile folder by itself.

Thanks guy... I did finally find something... if Mac OS X kept things in "folders" it would be easier!... but that OS uses "application packages" so to find something in for instance Firefox you have to CTRL+click on the app icon and in the contextual menu select "show package contents"... in there I found:

libssl3.dylib
libnsl3.dylib

That would probably be the equivalent of your ssl3.dll... Java is implemented a little differently... I've got plugins in an "Internet Plugins" folder that all my browsers access... again some of them are application packages...

I really wanted to find those ssl files... I'm pretty sure what's happening with the aliases that say they can't show me an original is because they're pointing back to one of those "hidden in the package" files...

Man... colour me "confused"... this new OS is just so different from looking for something in a folder!

Thanks for the help though... really... you have been! It helps to at least have a "clue" of what one is looking for...
