Yesterday all my bookmarks dissapeared. I did a file search and all I find are the bookmarks I have in my Internet Explorer browser. I use IE sparingly.

There's no way that I inadvertantly deleated the file. I do have a backup, but its several months old and I've added a ton of new bookmarks lately. Could this be the problem? When I did a Google search yesterday on lost bookmarks, I saw a forum post that mentioned something about a cache problem in an old 4.?? version of Netscape Nav that, when the cache file was deleted, fixed the problem and they magically reappeared. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Forum, AltaJoe!

    AltaJoe,

Did you search for bookmarks.html, and found no file of that name? If this is the case, then you have no choice, but to use your backup.

Did Netscape crash, or did Windows freeze/crash and you had to restart without shutting down correctly? Very strange for Bookmarks to completely disappear for no reason. When you look in your *.slt folder, do you see any bookmarks file?

As far as deleting the Cache folder, it's a good idea to do so on a frequent basis. You might want to take a look at this page: Preventive Browser Maintenance.

Nope, no freeze/crash. I was working in Netscape Navigator and I opened a page in another window. I closed out the first before realizing that the newly opened window's bookmarks were empty.

I searched in the *.slt folder and the onoy bookmark file is the one I have with Internet Explorer. The Netscape Bookmarks are gone.

    AltaJoe,

If there is no bookmarks.html file in your *.slt folder, and you have only one Profile, then your Bookmarks are gone. This is highly unusual!

You can copy the bookmarks.html file from the backup, and paste it into the current *.slt folder. In your shoes, I would back up frequently to prevent this from happening again. Backup your entire Profiles folder at least 1x/week, and if you are a heavy user, then do it daily.

    I think I'll do that.

BTW, after reading your Preventative Browser maintenance article I did a search of *.tmp files and came up with a list of 1,800 of them. Some show a date of several years ago. Is it OK to delete all tmp files?

Absolutely, get rid of all files in the Temp folder. They serve little purpose...

I'm certainly sorry about your Bookmarks, because I know how inconvenient that can be. I wonder if you have considered upgrading your browser? The version you have is quite obsolete, and there are much more stable, and secure versions now.

I highly recommend Mozilla for users who prefer a suite. Netscape is Mozilla, with the exception of no NIM/AIM, and you cannot access AOL Webmail through Mozilla Mail & Newsgroups Accounts. No big loss for me.

A new version of Mozilla, 1.7.6 is due for release next week, which will contain the most current security fixes. I don't recommend Netscape 7.2 because it has several security problems which have not yet been addressed. You will find Mozilla, and it's Mail component quite stable, and much faster than Netscape. Think about it... I'll be happy to help with the transition, which really only includes uninstalling Netscape, and installing Mozilla. Your current Netscape Profile will remain untouched by the browser change. Mozilla will recognize the Profile on install.

You may even wish to consider Firefox and Thunderbird, which are excellent programs, and even surpass Mozilla. You might want to read some of the information available on all three of these programs. If you're interested let me know and I'll give you some links.
