My System

Viewing movie trailers - Mozilla and/or FF

I have Netscape 4.7, Mozilla (latest) and FF 1.0 resident on my system.
I also have windows media player 10.0 installed.

If i try to view a movie trailer from yahoo.com using Netscape, it works fine.
If i try to view the same trailer using Moz or FF, they will be forced to close
with an error.

I dont think its a plugin i'm missing (just copied all plugins from netscape to Moz
and FF - nogo. I thing i'm missing a MIME type but not sure which one or how
to get a MIME type added into Moz/FF. I know i can do a manual entry for a
MIME but dont know which one is needed (or the format).

Is there a way to get the MIME types from Netscape to MOZ/FF?
Or does anyone know which one i need and the format?

thank you,
savagcl

clif,

Post links to these trailers, so we can try them.

Thanks!

Ramona

P.S. Mozilla 1.7.5 and Firefox 1.0 use Windows File Types.

clif,

No problem playing the trailer here. In your Media Player 10 settings, do you have the file type WMV enabled? That is the movie file type, so if you haven't enabled it, that's why you can't play the file in FF or Mozilla.

Very strange!
Yes, i have wmv enabled in WMP.

I'm wondering now if its because i have netscape, mozilla and firefox installed
there isnt some dis-connects????

As i said, netscape will play it, no problem and both netscape and moz have the
same plugins.
The error i'm getting is involving "nppl3260.dll" (and its in both browsers)???

Google is saying that the nppl3260 is a realplayer plugin. What that has to do
with WMP is beyond me!

Since i dont have realplayer (or quicktime for that matter) installed, i dont like
programs that attempt to take-over the system.

I do have realplayer-alternative and quicktime-alternative installed, codecs
only. Works great but quicktime-alt never gets used, realplayer-alt i only use
to listen to music (oldies 1900-1960) through winamp and it works very well
with .ra, .rm music files.

Since i have Moz and FF installed in PF, under different folders and of course
both have stuff in Doc & Settings and Common files. I think i'll un-install both
tonight and do a clean install of both (only after a backup tho). At least, it
will keep me from the boob-tube for a while tonight.

Will try some trailers tomorrow AM and let you know........

thanks,
savagcl

clif,

Having Netscape, Mozilla, and Firefox installed have absolutely no effect on the problem you're having. Uninstalling won't do a thing.

When you play the trailer if you get any window at all, there is a "Settings" and there you can select Media Player, Real Player, or QuickTime. See if you can get to this page:
Change Settings

These are the plugins I have in Netscape for Media Player 9:
npdrmv2.dll
npdrmv2.zip
npds.zip
npdsplay.dll
npmozax.dll
npwmsdrm.dll

They are not in FF or Mozilla, nor do they need to be.

clif,

One other thing to do, is to clear your Firefox and/or Mozilla Location Bar, and type in: about:plugins

Do you see Media Player plugins listed? Let us know which ones, and if they are enabled, i.e., show a "yes" under the Enabled column.

But, what about this:
For Mozilla users:

There is a known bug with the Windows Media plugin and Mozilla. There is a patch available from Mozilla that will fix this problem.

external site - links will open in a new windowDownload the patch for Windows Media from Mozilla

Save the patch (text file) to your desktop and then double-click on it. You will be asked if you would like to add the information into your system Registry. Click "yes" and restart Mozilla.

This is from: http://www.cbc.ca/listen/index.html
Scroll down till you see what I have listed above.
I don't know if the problem still exist, but it was there, and I did enter the Registry tweak.
Also, check "Change settings": you are allowed WMP, Real Player and Quicktime, as well as optimum connection speed. I guess that's what Ramona meant. I tried all three ways, and WMP and 100 Kb seems to be default, but Wow, High broadband is incredible with each player.

Westside,

I was thinking that the patch was for WMPlayer 7.1, but perhaps not. Surely it isn't still needed for FF, and Mozilla's latest browsers. I don't have the patch, and it works ...

I understand from the Canadian website that it was still for WMP9, but that's irrelevant, even if it would be necessary for the newer programs, when error is on the Real Player .dll. Although WMP seems to be default, either one of the player can be selected. It could be corrupted, but it should not affect the viewing of the clip. Maybe it could be deleted, and Real Player reinstalled.

I'm glad i checked back here before re-installing!!! Thanks for hanging in there, folks!

Of the dll's you listed, i am missing one of them - npmozax.dll.
The others are present in "both" Moz and Netscape. Could having them
present in both browsers be the problem?

npdrmv2.dll
npdrmv2.zip
npds.zip
npdsplay.dll
npmozax.dll <--------Missing in both browsers.
npwmsdrm.dll

Mime Type----------------Dll-------------enabled
MS DRM npdrmv2.dll Y
Windows Media Player npdsplay.dll Y
WMP Plugin contains:
asx,
x-ms-asf-plugin,
x-mplayer2,
x-ms-asf
x-ms-wm
x-ms-wma
x-ms-wax
x-ms-wmv
and x-ms-wvx
MS DRM npwmsdrm.dll Y
(and others not related to MS).

I clicked the link (Change settings) and got to the page. Both windows media
and realplayer are selected (along with High Broadband). When i accepted
these setting, some files for WMP9 was downloaded, a window opened and
the trailer played just fine.
I backed out, closed and reopened Moz, tried to play the trailer and it
bombed with the same error.

Guess i'll try to find that missing dll (and remove the dupe dll's.

Dont miss chapter 2 - where we will find out if our lad, hog-tied to a
railway junction, will escape from three trains (WMP, MOZ, FF) or be mashed
to a pulp!
PS: Never saw 3 trains crash head-on before, saw 2 in an old movie.

clif,

I sent you the npmozax.dll file via PM. As I said in the PM, use it only for Netscape 7.2, and place it only in the Netscape 7.2 plugins folder.

Will you please post the exact error you are receiving on the Yahoo site. Maybe we can better get to the bottom of your problem by zeroing in on the RealPlayer plugin error.

Thanks!

Ramona

EDIT:

Big fat DUH! You have Netscape Communicator installed! I was going back over the thread to refresh the details, and I caught the Communicator Version. Never mind about the plugin I sent you. It certainly won't work in Communicator...

My System

clif,

This is the Registry Key that Westside referenced earlier, and gave the link to the CBC radio station. This Registry file contained obsolete files, but I updated it to the new browser names. It still contained PHOENIX.EXE, MOZILLAFIREFOX.EXE, etc. If you decide to use this file, I would first look in the Registry and see if you already have the Registry Keys this file adds.

How to use the file:

Copy the below text to Notepad, exactly as it is, leaving at least one space after the last line. Save the file with a .reg extension.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\FIREFOX .EXE]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\MOZILLA .EXE]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\NETSCP. EXE]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ShimInclusionList\NETSCAP E.EXE]

Open your Registry and look at the ShimInclusionList folder. You may already have all the above entries. Also check the ShimExclusionList folder to ensure that none of the above programs are listed there.

If not listed, then save the file as a *.reg file. Once the file is saved, then double click the file. Windows will ask if you wish to save the info to your Registry, and your answer will be YES.

Please post back with any questions that you have.
