I want to be able to move emails from my C drive to my E drive (Iomega 20 gig portable) which is connected through a BUS port on my Gateway Solo laptop. It has a 4 gig hard drive that is close to full. I use NS 7.1 for email and have thousands of emails on file in folders within the NS program resident on C drive. If I can move them over they would need to be available for viewing and/or forwarding etc. on E as if they were in my inbox or in a folder on C drive. I read one of Ramona's threads "Archiving and Accessing Netscape/Mozilla Mail on CD" but am not sure how to do the task. It seems that i should substitute "E:" for CD in your instructions. I have made the archive on C that points to E and set up a folder named archive on E drive. I'm not sure what to do next. Thanks for your help. lgbest

Thanks Ramona - I have read your thread, however, I don't have a CD burner. I created the Archive folder within NS 7.1 on C drive and also created an Archive folder on E drive. I'm stuck. What's next?

Let me first say, that I am somewhat illiterate when it comes to multi HDD's and partitioned drives. Where did you set up the folder on the E: drive, i.e., what is the path to that folder?
Hi Ramona - I created a folder which is at E:\Archive. When I was following your directions I substituted "E" for CD down to "on the CD create a folder named: Archive". I put that folder on my E drive as above. The next step says to navigate to the ~\*slt\Mail....... folder on the HD. When I created the Archive on C drive I pointed the local directory to E:\Windows\Application data\mozilla\Users50\lgbest\3oz7ef.slt-new\mail\archive.invalid. This is where I am - I have not copied files because I'm not sure which ones to copy from which to where. The E drive is an Iomega 20 gig HDD which is always connecteed to my computer at a BUS 1.0 port.
If you want to send and receive from your E: drive, then you will have to set up a Mail Account on C: and in the Server Settings | Local directory field, point to the Mail Account folder on E:
On the E: drive, copy the Mail folder that you just set up from the C: drive. The path will be similar to E:\Mail\mail.isp.net. You should then be able to send, and receive from E:. You can also copy any Mail from any Account to this new account.
I am a little confused on exactly what you are trying to accomplish............

It would appear that he wants to use his E drive, which apparently is a second drive to act as an archive for the mail he has on drive C thus allowing him to free up the mail folder there. He also states that his E Drive is "nearly full" so one assumes it is his intention to use it to full capacity.
Your instructions should simplify the method as outlined by Ramona and enable him to accomplish this.
I want to free up space on my C drive (not E drive) which is almost full by moving most of my email over to E drive - BUT - I want to be able to open the now archived emails (hopefully now on E drive) if I need to review, forward etc. I am currently archiving on a monthly basis but they are still on my C drive taking up needed space.

If this is the way you want to go, then this is what you do next:
To ensure we are on the same page, you have set up a "Dummy Account" on the C: drive, named "Archive", and copied all the messages that you wish to archive, into this folder. Yes?
You have set up a folder on the E: drive named "Archive" (E:\Archive). Yes?
If you have done the above, then close Netscape and Quick Launch
Open Windows Explorer
Open the *.slt\Mail\Archive folder on the C: drive
Copy all files/folders, including SBD folders (containing subfolders)
Next:
Open the E:\Archive folder on the E: drive. Paste the files/folders you just copied from the C: Archive folder, into this folder. The contents of the folder will be similar to this:
Directory of E:\Archive
Archived Mail.sbd (This folder contains the subfolders)
Archived Mail
Drafts
Inbox
Sent
Templates
Trash
On the C: drive, the Server Settings | Local directory path must point to:
E:\Archive
Keep in mind that you can view, edit, and send messages, but you cannot receive messages in the "Dummy Account".
OR
If you choose to move the entire Mail folder to the E: drive, then follow captjlddavis' instructions:
Copy the entire MAIL folder to E:\
This will create E:\MAIL\with all your "mail.isp.com-n" folders.
Then edit your "local directory" pathes to reflect the E:\mail\ locations
Your current "local directory" pathe reads something like:
C:\Windows\Application data\mozilla\Users50\lgbest\3oz7ef.slt\mail\mail.isp.com
Just change the:
C:\Windows\Application data\mozilla\Users50\lgbest\3oz7ef.slt part to to read:
E:\
Final pathe should read something like:
E:\MAIL\mail.isp.com
If you have more that one account, change additional accounts "local directory" pathes also.

You mentioned that you have thousands of messages. Don't leave more than a couple of MB of Mail in your Inbox, or you surely risk losing all that Mail.
These three choices are for you to decide, and hopefully we haven't totally confused the issue for you.
Hi Folks - I've been away and have returned to try to get this task completed. Ramona, I have done exactly what you laid out in you last reply. I also changed the local Directory at C:\Archive... to E:\Archive as you pointed out. I then moved several mail folders(including contents) as subfolders of the inbox to the dummy account on C drive. To check it out I opened E:\Archive and the folders were there. Now the problem continues.
To open the E:\Archive folder Windows asks what program to use. I designate Netscape and 7.1 opens. Unfortunately the emails open in Navigator as documents, not as email. This means all of the codes and gibberish are included. Second, it will take forever to open a specific email if I could ever find it through the gibberish. I had been archiving on my C drive by year ie: 2003 as a sub folder of my inbox, so the folder holds 12 months of incoming emails. I have also been archiving sent emails the same way. Ideally I will create other folders to be attached to the E:\Archive inbox.
All I want to do is to have the mail transfer over to E drive as email not documents so that when I open the E:\Archive folder I have an inbox with sub folders, I can open the folder, click on the title and the email opens.
Your results are beyond my comprehension without actually being able to take a look at what you've done. I think that now it is quite clear that you need to move ALL your mail to the E: drive. You should now follow captjlddavis' advice.
Forget the Archive "Dummy Account", and simply move your Mail folder to the E: drive. It can be moved to any location, and you can direct Netscape to the Mail folder by manually changing the "Local directory" Server Settings in each account to point to: E:\Mail\mail.isp.net
Back up the Mail folder before doing any editing, and ensure that Netscape and Quick Launch are closed.
Hi Ramona and Captain - I'm still trying to get this to work. I'm also probably driving you guys crazy!
What happens (per your instructions) is when I move mail from my lgbest account (say the Inbox) on C drive to Dummy C, it does indeed copy into the E:\Archive Inbox folder that you had me set up. When I click on the E:Archive Inbox folder, Windows first asks what program do I want to use to open the contents. I select Netscape and Netscape 7.1 opens and the contents of the Inbox folder on E:\Archive open in Navigator as documents, not in NS mail. I am trying to get them to open in the "Mail and Newsgoups" program as email i.e. the Inbox would open with the titles etc. of the email . I could then select which one I want to review, forward etc. and it would open as an email. The folders and files in E:\Archive read like inbox, inbox.sbd, inbox.msf., etc. I'm not sure what this means.
You say to forget the Dummy account on C drive. I think you are telling me to point the entire lgbest account on C to E drive (E:\Mail\mail.isp.net). I think what would happen is all mail would end up on E drive and not be resident on C drive at all. For a couple of reasons I don't want to move all mail to the E drive, only old mail that I select and want to get off my C:\ hard drive but still access as email on E drive. (I have now installed NS7.1 on E drive but don't know how to get mail from C Drive it into that program, besides it looks like NS7.1 is defaulting back to C drive.) Also, my E drive is an Iomega HDD portable and it has an auto copy feature called Automatic Backup v. 1.02. You can tell the program exactly which folders/files to copyover to E. Maybe there's a way to get all mail copied as email to E drive but still retain the originals on C drive. Does somebody out there know how to do this? I could then just delete from C drive and accomplish pretty much what I want to do. I would still have to clean mail on E drive but not very often.
So I guess the issue still is how do I get email to open in E drive as email, not as documents in Navigator.

Don't open the E:\Archive in Windows Explorer. Open it in Netscape Mail & Newsgroups. If you set up the Dummy Account correctly
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings | Local directory
The path in the Local directory field should point to E:\Archive. Your Mail is accessible from within Netscape Mail. The Mail should open as any message would.
Inbox = Mail
Inbox.sbd = Subfolders
Inbox.msf = Mail Summary Files
