Netscape 7.1 has suddenly decided not to open. When I click on the icon, the Netscape 7.1 logo appears, but then the program hangs up. I am now using an old version, Netscape 4.5, which is not satisfactory, since none of my Netscape 7.1 downloaded files can be accessed. I'm told I'll have to Uninstall Netscape 7.1 and start all over, which is a hassle. Re-installing the program is a lengthy procedure, and I'm afraid I'll lose all my Preferences, bookmarks, email addresses and so forth. I've checked to see if there's a Profile folder, but I don't see anything like that. I also have Netscape 7.0. If I uninstall Netscape 7.1, will I get Netscape 7.0 back? I'd appreciate an email reply if that's possible.

After my Netscape 7.1 hangs up, I get an error message with the following "details." This may help.

Here is the "details" message explaining what's wrong with my Netscape 7.1. Of course I don't understand a word of it:

Welcome to the Forum, Walter Blum!

    Hi Walter,

    Close Netscape and Quick Launch
Delete these two files and one folder:
    compreg.dat
    Located in: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components
    xul.mfl
Located in your salted (*.slt) folder
    C:\.....\Application Data\Mozilla\profilename\*.slt
    chrome folder
Located in your salted (*.slt) folder

If this doesn't fix your problem, then create a new Profile:
Guidelines for Creating a New Profile.

BTW, uninstalling and reinstalling Netscape has no effect on the Profile,as it remains intact during the uninstall. The new install then picks up the existing Profile .

    Let us know your results.

Sorry, but we don't answer problems by private email. That would do away with the purpose of the Forums. Answering your problem on the Forum, may be beneficial to another user dealing with the same issue...

Another easy way to save the profile is to have it located on a different drive. I do that. When I re-install Netscape I let it create the default profile. Then I start via the profile mgr and create a new name using the exact same name of the backup profile and point to it on the other drive where it is located.

All done! All bookmarks, pws, mail, etc are back and I do not have to re-configure anything!

That is why I have I.E.., they make it impossible to save that stuff!

Can you save old email first?

    Hi all,

Regarding this thread... Is there a way to save locally saved email prior to this procedure? I installed WinXP on my machine and now N7.1 doesn't boot, probably got disconnected as this thread and others suggest. So... I'd like to restore things but not lose my old email.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Welcome to the Forum, ACDurston!

    Hi Andrew,

Make a backup copy of your entire Profiles folder before doing any editing. On Windows XP it is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings/user_name/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

This way you have a good copy, including Bookmarks, Address Book, and your Mail.

Uninstalling, and reinstalling Netscape will not touch your Profile. However, I always recommend backing up the Profile anyway.

Follow the guidelines here: Netscape Won't Start

    Path for Win98SE?

    Ramona,

Thanks for the reply. Is the path the same for an N7.1 installation under Win98SE? All my email work was done prior to the WinXP upgrade, hence I need to find and preserve the older profile.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Tool for finding old messages?

    Ramona,

Thanks again for the help. I do have Netscape running but may have lost my old preferences files during an earlier reinstall (still looking). Do you or anyone know of a tool that I can use to search my hard drive for old locally saved Netscape mail messages and convert to a text file or such?

    Regards,
    Andrew
