How do I repair this? I've never had this happen before and I've used Netscape for a long time.

Also, after choosing one of the profiles for Netscape 7.0, the netscape registration server keeps connecting but it takes a while to connect. I've never seen this before either.

Both issues are taking place on a winXP machine and Netscape's official troubleshooting help doesn't answer either of these questions.

Has anyone here ever encountered this?

    Welcome to the Forum, songdove!

    Hi songdove,

When you copied your Mail files, did you copy the SNM files, if yes then this is your problem? May I assume that the 7.0 install did not automatically convert your Mail ?

Delete the activation.dll file, and that will end the constant accessing of registration.

Let us know if you have more questions.

I had not copied the snm files, no, I did an import instead.

The machine this is on is not mine, and it appears that when Netscape 7 was installed on the XP machine, the people who originally installed it didn't have it automatically import all mail and settings from 4.79.

Thanks for the activation tip, I will look after that.

So if I didn't copy the snm files straight over, what other options could be causing the problem?

    songdove,

Could you give me a few more details about what is happening. Corrupt covers a lot of territory. It could be you will need to create a new Profile for these folks, but without more detail it would be a guessing game.

    Thanks!

I'll describe how the import went:

I was telling Messenger to import mail from Communicator 4.79, and the progress bar got half a centimeter into the import process and froze up the computer.

We rebooted the computer, and noticed that drafts, sent, templates, and trash had been attempted in the communicator folder now under Local Folders in Messenger.

We tried the import a second time, but were able to use XP's end task function without locking up the entire computer this time.

When we reopened Messenger, there were now two communicator folders in Local Folders.

We tried to delete these folders and Messenger hung again. After reopening the program yet again, we noticed that one of the two communicator folders had successfully been moved to the Local Folders Trash bin, despite Messenger freezing up. So we emptied the trash and tried to delete the second communicator folder. That froze up messenger again. After reopening Messenger, we began removing the drafts folder, then the templates folder, and those folders moved to the trash just fine, but when we tried to move the trash folder from the communicator folder, Messenger froze up again. The final time we reopened Messenger, there was a copy of the communicator trash folder in the Messenger Local Folders Trash folder.

There appears to be some corruption there and Netscape doesn't have an Inbox Repair Tool like Outlook has, nor is there a database repair tool that I know of similar to the Access repair tool.

How do I remove the offending folders from Local Folders without crashing Messenger, and how can the Communicator mail be successfully imported?

The user of this computer had cleared out the trash in communicator 4.79 before we had made the second attempt at importing the mail. So that had already been done.

This strikes me as a case of a corrupt file.

Is creating a new profile the only answer here, or are there other options as well?

    songdove,

    Let's do this:

    Close Netscape
    Back up your Profiles Folder

    Next:
In Windows Explorer, rename the Mail Folder to OldMail

Open Netscape and delete the existing Mail Account
Create a new account using the exact same information
Once you have created the new account, highlight the account name
    Fill in the blanks

    Close Netscape
    In Windows Explorer
Go to your Account Name Folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\mailaccountname
    You will see these Folders:
    Drafts
    Inbox
    Sent
    Templates
    Trash
    These files will be pristine

Now... Go to the Communicator Mail Folder and copy all the files with NO SNM extensions

You should have your Mail intact. I just ran through this procedure to be certain I had included all the steps. It should work perfectly for you.

Post back if you are not perfectly clear on what to do.
