I use Thunderbird on a Windows 8.1 desktop. Thunderbird was taking longer and longer to download messages and has not downloaded any in the last few days. I know there are new messages from webmail and from my smartphone.

I just deleted the Thunderbird program folder and reinstalled Thunderbird but the problem remains. Therefore, I am using the latest version of Thunderbird.

    Any suggestions?

Hi rusty2, Don't know whether you've been to Mozilla Help, but I found this in the TB Forum: "Thunderbird slow, unusable. CAUSE: Windows/Microsoft Defender "
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1067704
Have a look and see if this will fix your problem. Latest TB version 38.4. Neil.

Thanks for your quick reply. I use Norton Internet Security. I've used Thunderbird with Norton for years.

Have you had any recent Norton updates that may be around the time your problem started? Neil.

I'm not sure about Norton updates, but I did exclude the Thunderbird profile folder from Norton scans and much to my surprise, the messages downloaded. It worries me since Norton has picked up messages containing viruses in the past.

My next task is to split up my Thunderbird accounts since the file is too big and the downloading is too slow.

Many thanks for your suggestion. Do you consider it safe to not have emails scanned?

In TB, Open Tools > Options > Security > Anti-Virus > Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages. Neil.

Thanks so much. I'll try that.

I think some of my problem might have been having too large a profile file. I just copied it and then split it in two: business and personal. I'm now deleting personal folders from the business profile and business from the personal one.

    Thunderbird problems in Windows 10

After upgrading a recent HP desktop from Win 8.1 to Windows 10, Thunderbird came up ok but then would not receive or send messages. Specifically, when clicking Get Messages at top left, a normal message would appear at bottom left "Connection to Verizon ", but then nothing happened. When trying to Write a message and then Send it, would get the bizarre message, immediately, Verizon has timed out. I suspected that it had nothing to do with Verizon since I could get on the Internet, so started searching for solutions on the Web.

Reloading the program (one suggestion) was just a big waste of time. Another suggestion was to update drivers. The ones that were said to be outdated, however, didn't seem to have anything to do with my problem, so I decided not to spend the $29.95 requested!

Then I read about changing the Windows firewall settings. That worked; here's how to do it:

Go to the Control Panel, Under Windows Firewall, click "Allow an app through the Windows Firewall ". Scroll through the listed allowed apps to make sure yours is not there then click the "Change Settings" button the top right. Click Yes to allow Windows Firewall to make changes to your system. Click "allow another app" at the bottom right, then Browse at the bottom right to find your app. Highlight it and then hit the Add button. But still not done. You also need to reboot the computer to allow that change to take effect. Happy mailing! Jeff

Changing the Norton settings and splitting my profile into two solved my problem so this thread is now closed.

Hi rusty2, As the Thread Starter-YOU need to initiate the "Resolved" action. At the top left > Thread Tools > Close. Thanks Neil.
