I have dell dimension 3100 and just re-installed windos XP professionall Media Center on. I have also installed drivers from dell resource DC and all drivers are ok.
The only problem is I cannot connect to the internet. The Lan is set to obtain IP adresses automatically but it only picks up the internal IP which is 169.254.19.217. I manually assigned an IP address from my range which was 192.168.0.7, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 and DNS same as gateway and it connect to lan, but still no connection to internet. Error is DNS error. I have not installed any virus software, just OS and drivers.

The NIC is onboard the motherboard. I even took the battery and inserted it again as I have had similar problem on an HP machine and that worked. But I do not seem to connect to internet. I used the ethernet cable to connect to another dell machine and an IP address of 192.168.0.8
was automatically assigned. I have wiped the machine for the second time and re-installing Windows again, but need help to resolve connection issue.
Thanks Nicholil

Looking at the Wireless Icon at the task bar, it keeps trying to acquire Network Address and when it finally acquires it, it gets disconnected immidiately. This cycly continues perpetually. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but that wouldn't solve the problem. I am sure I have more that enough IP leases as I also have other Laptops that connects to the wireless without problems. I would appreciate if anyone can advice urgently.

Hi,
I have a PC with XP Pro. I have a router and a laptop with Vista home.
I had a problem with the laptop connecting several months ago. After trying several solutions I got 15 foot ethernet cables and moved the router upstairs. It was successful and it worked fine untill 4 days ago.
if I move the laptop next to the router it usually works OK, move it 10 feet away and it will probably disconnect.
Now when I go to connect to the network I find there are so many networks added all with added numbers id default 12345, default 123456, and so on. these are all alsu unsecured networks. My network is secure and also default.
I would like to remove all the unwanted networks.
After all the solutions I have tried my own feeling it is down to Vista.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,

I have had a wireless network set up for some time and only recently am I having problems. I have a Linksys wrt54gs w/speedbooster wireless router. I am connecting to a broadband cable modem (no brand I can find). I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium. Internet works just fine when I connect modem straight to the computer. My wireless devices i.e. Ipod Touch and PS3 find the wireless network and connect to it, but can't connect to internet. I have troubleshooted this with Linksys as well as a few other places and still no results, I am really hoping you folks can help. I have even tried a different wireless router with the same results so I don't believe it to be a faulty router (unless a second brand new one is also broke). My desktop PC is hardwired to the router but it still doesn't connect to the internet. Network Magic shows that the PC and my Ipod are connected to the network, but a red dotted line is indicating it cannot find the internet connection. I would appreciate your insight. Thanks!

I recently had my desktop fixed and I’m now struggling with my LAN, especially with printing from my laptop. This was previously possible.

The desktop is the ‘main” PC. Connected to it is an Oki 4100 printer, a HP Officejet 5610. Both are connected to the desktop with USB cables. Then I have an ADSL modem that is connected to the desktop. Everything works perfectly. I had to re-install the drivers of the printers. I can print on both printers, I have internet connection, etc.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/IMG_2020.jpg

The problem is printing from the laptop. The laptop is connected to the modem by cable and by wireless. I am unable to print from the laptop to these printers, but my internet connection is good.

I did the following:
Re-installed the printer drivers on the laptop
Changed my Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties from “obtain an IP address automatically” to manual settings

I am for instance able to use Synctoy?!

Any advice will be appreciated

I have a client who is using a Tenant program and is stored on his Server SBS 2003 R2, SP2 - & wishes to log on to his server remotely at home using his Gateway PC running XP Pro. Now, he has an HP 6500 OfficeJet printer that's wireless. Now, I'd confirm that the settings are correct.

Under "Local Resource" in the RDC program, the printer choice is checked.

Under RDC-Tcp Properties: connections are all checked excepted the "Connection" box, and under: "Disable the following", is all unchecked.

So am I missing something here?

Is the server itself require the printer drive to be installed?

When I log onto the server after these settings are set, on the server, I can't see the local HP 6500 printer nor know for sure how to print to it???

If I am suppose to install the printer driver on the server, how does RDC know that it's actually located back on the remote user's PC.

Please advise if anyone has any suggestions?

I have 2 Vista PC's here, one is Vista Business, it has a folder shared on the network. the second is Home Premium, this has had the mentioned shared folder mapped as Z: for the last year and a half with no problems.
All of a sudden the second PC cannot access the first, when i try to remap the drive it keeps adding computername\ before the username. If I put the correct computername in for the first pc, it changes back. I have had similar problems with NAS boxes where I had to change the Lan manager Authentiction level, but as there is no secpol in Home Premium I cannot do this.

Any ideas what I can do and why this suddenly happened?

"The network may no longer be in range" is the error message.

Windows XP Pro with service pack 3 on HP Laptop NX5000 also on HP/Compaq NC6000 and on another desktop system containing an internal Belkin wireless card at another location with a different wireless router . The wireless routers are working correctly as other computers are connecting just fine.

I right-click the little wireless network icon on the taskbar and click "View available wireless networks". My network comes up in the list, I highlight it and click "connect". Then I get the following message.

"Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again."

At this point, the "available wireless networks" list goes blank (SSID's disappear from the list of available networks). If I click "view available wireless networks" again, I get the same list of available wireless networks and the process repeats itself.

The wired network connections on all systems work fine.
I have swapped the internal wireless card for another new card.
I have inserted a known-good add-in PCMCIA wireless card and the result is the same.
I have four-bar signals on all systems and other systems connect just fine.

On all systems, the only wireless network device that works is a USB ethernet, and it works perfectly.

I tried Windows 2000 on one of the systems with the same result. I have swapped the memory on one of the systems for known-good memory and the result is the same. Windows firewall is turned off and no other firewalls or antivirus are installed. These are all fresh, clean loads of Windows XP Pro and 2000.

I'm stumped.

I've been using my Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade for a little while, now... and I notice one aggravating problem. All of my other computers are either XP or Mac based, so I can't use the Homegroup networking setup. I use a D-Link Gamer Lounge Ethernet (wired) router... it's new, as my D-Link 704 just took a nose dive on me.

Everything seems to work pretty good, but then I try to access one of my other computers from the new Win 7 machine and it appears to need to rebuild the network connections... the address window starts this green progress band running across... but it seems to never complete. I also have a problem with the Firefox window disappearing... I mention that, because I'm sitting here testing my networking, and noticed that the Firefox window disappeared, when I tried to boot... so I had to close that window, even though it wasn't visible.

I can say, once I boot the machine, the network is back up and running, but it never seems to last for long. Is this just something I'll have to accept until the first SP is released, or am I doing something wrong with my network? This never happened before adding the Win 7 machine to the network.
Thanks for any help...

I have set up a subject specific partition on the 2nd HDD in my W7 machine and set it to share by right clicking on the partition, choosing Advanced Sharing, clicking Share this folder, clicking on Permissions and giving Everyone full control. Problem is, I cannot access it from XP Pro. I can see the shared partition in My Computer in XP but I get the You might not have permission error.

If I share a folder within the partition it works fine so my thinking is that either I cannot share partitions across the network or I need to add another step to do so.

Both computers belong to the same workgroup.

Any thoughts would be welcomed, thanks
