[Unable to open mailbox; error says file created with a newer version]
I had a HDD on my desktop die recently (see previous thread) and after all of the help I got (thanks again BTW) I was unable to salvage my backups. I finally decided to start from scratch and downloaded Courier directly from Rosecity's site before they pulled it (weeks if not days actually) and installed it on my notebook.
Everything was working fine and I made backups regularly to avoid problems. Fast-forward to present day and I decided to re-install windows on my notebook, but not before copying my entire Courier folder including my .box and .bak files.
I installed Courier on my desktop's new HDD but when I go to open my mailbox I get the error that says it was created with a newer version of Courier. I never downloaded the beta much less installed it and this mailbox was created just a couple/few months ago with the last verison of Courier made available from Rosecity's website.
I have tried installing Courier on both my desktop and notebook and they both produce the same error. Could someone please help me? I love the program and have been using it since it was Calypso in the '90's, but I am frustrated that when I have problems and need to re-install it I lose all of my emails.
PS my reasons for re-installing windows was because IE was running slow on my notebook, other than that all of my programs worked fine.

I have also had this message, but was some time ago. And I don't remember how I solved it... As I understand it, you installed Courier 3.5 on your computer and used it for several months. Then, you made a back up of files (did you back up the entire directory or just files? There are several .bin files associated with the files and you made no mention of them.) Next you reinstalled windows and then the same Courier 3.5 and now it doesn't work. Okay, here are some suggestions:
2. Worst case: download courex from http://www.laurencejackson.com/Courex/ This is a great freeware utility that can parse out your emails to eml files that can readily be imported into Courier, as well as the addressbook. This isn't my preferred approach, as I think there is some minor glitch you're encountering. Do try the Yahoo group.

Thanks for your help once again. What I did was set Courier to automatically backup each time I closed it, so I had been backing up the enitre time I started "from scratch". Unfortunately I could not find the copy of Courier I downloaded from Rosecity when I re-installed windows (I think maybe I ran it instead of saving and then running, can't remember). I had to do a search online and I downloaded Courier from somewhere, so this might be my problem.
When I decided to re-install windows I just copied the entire Courier folder over to an external HDD. Once I installed Courier I just pointed it to my mailbox, but that didn't work and I tried the backup with no luck either.
I tried to join the yahoo group a while back but couldn't find where to do it. I'll try again and see if I have better luck this time. Thanks

Okay, the picture is clearer now.... the Yahoo group is located at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/CourierEmailForum/ However, if you join that group, check the FILES section in left margin and you can download what I call "Courier Classic", which is an assemblage of the last successful beta. I've been using it since 2007 with no problems and I think it will be able to handle your mailbox. You can also get courier classic at http://users.zoominternet.net/~RockFox/Courier/ (build 1195)

David, as always thank you for your time and assistance with my stubborn problem. I am waiting for approval to the yahoo forum, but meanwhile I downloaded Courier from your other link.
There were a couple of things that I noticed that leads me to believe that I have never used a beta version. One was that it installed into the Courier folder as Courier beta which it was never labled that. The other was that it changed the icons to the boat as opposed to the envelope (I had the envelope ever since I upgraded from Calypso to Courier way back when).
Either way after I installed it I pointed it to my mailbox (not the backup) that I copied from my notebook and it still gives me the same error. It states that it was created or converted with a newer version of Courier.
I am completely baffled by this and I hope I can find a solution as I hate to once again lose all of my contacts and email correspondece that I have been saving. Mind you that the first time this happened that you helped me I had archived email dating back to the Calypso days and they are all work related. Thanks again and let me know if you have any other suggestions. Take care.

The regular courier and the beta don't coexist very well. my Suggestion is to uninstall Courier and then reinstall the beta. I think that will fix your problem, as the beta should certainly be newer. Do let me know. thanks,
david
David, I have a few questions for you. I tried installing the beta version on my desktop, but I keep getting an error saying, "setup was unable to create the directory C:\Documents and settings\all users\documents\mail"
Also (please bare with me because I'm no computer wiz) I noticed that this version doesn't support IMAP4. The last version that I was using I had setup IMAP (for the first time) but it was working. Are there differnt versions of IMAP ie 1-4 or something? Does the fact that I had this setup give a clue as to what version I used last? I posted over at yahoo so I am waiting for a reply there. Thanks again for all of your help.

Okay, I'm a bit confused myself. regarding the error, I am assuming that the directory may already exist. One possible trick is to delete the mail directory and then redo it. Also, be sure that all copies of Courier are removed. And... I 'think' the setup may offer other options for placement of the mailbox??? IMAP with the beta is better than the original, so while I'm not sure of the numbers, IMAP should work as good or better than 3.5. That was an area that I tested a lot. Let me know. thanks,
david
