Upgrading to PocoMail? Not So Fast!

I have used Courier since it was Calypso and PocoMail since ver. 3, so I know of whence I speak. PM is my default client. It has lots of nice features I have gotten used to. I have also been involved in PM beta tests. Having said that, Courier is still on my machine and will continue to be as long as it will run.

Before you rush out and upgrade from Courier to PocoMail you should be aware of some of PocoMail's limitations. At the very least, download the (fully functional) trial from Poco Systems. Also if Courier works for you keep it on your computer and set up PM so it doesn't delete messages from the server upon download.

Why?
1 - If you tend to send or receive a lot of mail in HTML format, PM may not render them correctly. Per Poco Systems: "No dependence on Internet Explorer's HTML engine, reducing exposure to viruses."

That may be true, but the non-standard rendering engine will mess up many emails, sometimes making them unreadable. And the only way to correctly forward an HTML e-mail in PM is to forward it as an attachment.

If you leave Courier on your system and the mail on the server, you can still retrieve the HTML message PM mangled into Courier and read it.

There has been much discussion on PocoMail/Barca forums about this issue. Go to http://www.pocosystems.com/forum/ and search "HTML" (BTW - Barca is PM with a calendar module.) Note the oft given response, "some more advanced or even non-standard code in the message" as an excuse. Odd, other programs seem to read it just fine.

2 - There are also limitations to the graphics you can paste into an e-mail.

3 - There is a feature called "View Mail on Server." A great feature for screening out spam, and when it works correctly but...if you ignored the previous advice and have PM delete your mail from the server upon download, beware. Large emails (or those with large attachments) will disappear upon download, and will be deleted from the server. The size is not consistent, either. (i.e It is not only mail over 1 MB.) By disappear, I mean a blank e-mail will show up in your inbox. Sometimes all following emails will disappear, too.

Using Online Folders is a safer option.

Do I like PM? YES! In fact now and again I have gotten frustrated by the HTML issue and tried other e-mail clients and always found them wanting compared to PM. But I think you should know of the minuses as well.

Actually I was holding out for the much-promised Courier 4, but...
