Mailbox size over 1.5Gigs

Hi,

I had asked a similar question before and the 'answer' was to use the 'save to archive' on a folder but I do not find that as a real solution.

Typically I delete old emails but leave some to preserve the email address to lookup in case they come back in. I have the emails in folder per name. I usually do this delete (cntl-del) on all but 1 or 2 per folder. Then I will delete the wastebasket and compress and exit.

This did get the mailbox size down from 1.8Gigs to 1.6Gigs but this is still TOO BIG!!!.

It keeps growing and growing back from the Calypso days.

Is there anything that is keeping it this large? Something that the delete and compress is not doing?

If this keeps up I will have to start with a brand new mailbox with is a big problem since I need the current emails (3 months) and I use filtering extensively. I have not seen a way to export/import the filters.

Can anyone help???? PLEASE!!!!!

Jack

When Courier crashes (as it does somewhat too frequently) it takes over 20 minutes to rebuild the db. This is much too long.

Is there no one who can address these issues? PLEASE!!!!

In my experience, that's much too big for a mailbox. Is it possible you have mail with attachments? Right click on the folder with your mailbox name (top folder, typically on the left). Select "SEARCH ALL FOLDERS." Select "SHOW ALL MESSAGES" in the resulting dialog box (on the right, below "HELP"). Sort the resulting list by size to see to see if you have any large sized messages. You can always strip attachments out and save them, keeping the emails with text and addresses.

Of course, there are attachments and yes it is too big. Now 1.7G

Many people have V-cards or other signatures attachments.

And yes I do get a lot of attachments.

This I know but I do delete the mail every so often on only leave current mail except for those that I always want to keep. I cannot believe that the 1.7G is valid.

I will try doing what you say and delete the the email or large attachments and see what happens.

Where is Cream Corn? I am in Daytona.

Was the suggestion successful? I don't like to leave anyone with a hanging question that's unresolved if possible. thanks,

Deleting emails with large attachments was successful. Didn't realisze the size of some (20Megs). It is now below 800Megs (deleted about a Gig's worth).

So I am now more aware of this.

Thanks.

Big Courier mailboxes

I kinda sorta worked my way around the problem of huge Courier mailboxes. Once they've gotten to about 750 MB, I copy the mailbox to the desktop and rename it something like MyMail20080101-20090101.box. I then move the file to the Courier\Mailbox\Backup folder. Then I delete all the messages in the current Mailbox and start the new mailbox from scratch. It's simple enough to do a Mailbox/Open and search the old mailboxes that way.

I have been doing something similar only there just always seems to be too much. Even now my mailbox is 800Meg which is small. I have many folders for customers, vendors, etc. So I would periodically delete old/dead customers, etc. every 3-6 months. It is just never enough.

I have begun to filter more on our email server to remove more spam and when I get large email attachments (sometimes 20-30Megs) to download them from web mail instead of having them come into Courier. So email is no a 2 phase process (yuck).

I would like there to be a way of exporting and importing filters, signature (which I use for quick canned replies) so that I could with a brand new file when needed.

Yes, I know what you mean. The boxes get big in a hurry (even with all attachments saved separately) and it's a PITA to continually create new mailboxes. I love Courier's small RAM and VM footprints but as time has gone by, I've gotten discouraged with the mailbox sizes and the rebuild times when Courier decides it has been shut down improperly for reasons unknown to me. I also appreciated Courier's ability to edit incoming messages which is rare in email clients. At least all of them I've tried except Eudora and quasi editing in Thunderbird (Edit as New). I see the edit capability is continued in Courier/Poco but it wasn't in the PocoV4 I used for awhile back in 2005 except for edit as new as in Tbird.
One day I'm going to have to make a decision. Stay with Courier or go back to Eudora v7 which also allows editing of incoming mail which I do a lot. So with Eudora I'd have the editing but not the huge mailboxes. I don't even want to think about migrating all the emails to the new PocoMail much less retaining the huge mailboxes which is the main reason I think about ditching Courier. I don't need portable mailboxes so it'll be awhile before I decide what I'm going to do.
It seems nobody designs a client with me specifically in mind. All I want is small memory footprints, editable incoming mail, easy filters and normal mailboxes as in Eudora and the original Poco Mail. You'd think I could find one of those at random after trying maybe 20 email clients but not so far. :-D

Okay, I'm confused... Pocomail 4.8 is all of that yet you aren't considering it.

Well, I wouldn't say I'm not considering it. Maybe I missed something somewhere. Doesn't the new Courier/Poco retain the mailbox for all incoming/outgoing mails plus account info in a single file as Courier 3.5 does? Or is there an option for multiple mailboxes as opposed to the single MyMail.box?
I love Courier and it's only the huge gigabyte mailboxes that give a problem. In defense of Courier, an unexpected crash that requires a rebuild of the mailbox doesn't happen often. It usually happens when a received message has two or three nested email attachments, the last of which is really the content of the message. So that's the one I edit and copy to paste in the actual received message. Then I delete the attached emails and occasionally when I'm done, the nested & edited message is likely to be retained in the Inbox as a separate email when it was actually just an attachment. If I don't notice it and close Courier, it'll crash every time and I can understand why what with a sudden new received message in the Inbox that was never received.
But still, I'm certainly considering going to the new PocoMail. I only switched from Poco back in 2004 because I liked Courier much better. Courier 3.5 uses about 1/5 the RAM that most clients do and loads very rapidly. In short, Courier has been the best email client out there for my needs and that will probably hold true for the new Poco/Courier. The only thing I wonder about is retaining those humongous mailbox files which I routinely get around by creating a new mailbox after one reaches about 750 megs.
Bottom line: You'll likely get my $20 if for no other reason than to give it a shot. I've spent a double sawbuck for a hell of a lot less product.

NO. PocoMail uses a single subdirectory to keep mail, attachments, signatures, all user settings. This has no size limit and can be automatically backed up to any selected location. There is no one huge file with everything. The one subdirectory does address the same concern of being able to easily backup all user data and attributes. You also have the option of having attachments embedded within the mail or kept in a separate attachments subdirectiory (my choice.)
david
NOTE: If you import Courier data to PocoMail, the mail and attachments from the import will be in one file because that is how the import works. However, all future email and attachments can be separate.

ALRIGHT! I obviously missed the "directory" part.
I'll likely be playing with the new Courier tomorrow if nothing else interrupts me.
By Monday, for sure and certain.

My longed for email client seems to have arrived. Thanks a bunch.

I think you will like it. It's not Courier and, although it has many of Courier's features, several of them work slightly differently or are invoked differently.... but I find it very powerful.
